[0:03] The flames of Desert Storm. A Saudi
[0:05] refinery hit by shellfire. The Iraqi
[0:07] battery later knocked out by helicopter
[0:09] gunships. Part of a massive air war.
[0:14] This is a special 1-hour edition of the
[0:16] CBS Evening News. Dan Rather reporting.
[0:19] Good evening. It is now almost exactly
[0:21] 24 hours since the first bursts of light
[0:23] over Baghdad confirmed to us that the
[0:26] United States and other nations had
[0:28] indeed taken the war to Saddam Hussein.
[0:31] We have stayed on the air every minute
[0:33] since then, bringing you as best we can
[0:36] breaking news of what's now officially

[0:40] the CBS Evening News will of course

[1:05] we know. Allied warplanes have flown
[1:07] more than a thousand bombing runs
[1:09] against military targets, airfields,
[1:11] missile sites, and Iraqi troops. US
[1:14] warships have launched more than a 100
[1:16] cruise missiles, some of them blasting
[1:18] targets in the heart of Baghdad. Massive
[1:21] US ground forces are now maneuvering and
[1:23] moving up close to the border with
[1:25] Kuwait. Iraq has fought back, but not
[1:28] nearly as fiercely as expected. One US
[1:31] pilot was shot down and killed. One
[1:33] Saudi oil refinery damaged by artillery
[1:36] shellfire. Bob Simon in Saudi Arabia
