[0:36] The comeback kid comes to Madison Square

[0:38] Garden.

[0:47] And after those tough, low walk through

[0:50] the valley moments in New Hampshire, who

[0:53] would have thought

[0:55] that you would see him here now tonight

[0:58] as as the presidential nominee of his

[1:01] party.

[1:05] Listen, in politics, it can all go to

[1:07] not so quickly.

[1:10] But for these seconds, for this moment,

[1:12] how sweet it is.

[1:15] And as the Clintons, who must be

[1:17] thinking some version of that,

[1:20] walk to Madison Square Garden, let's go

[1:21] to the CBS News correspondent who's

[1:23] covered the Clinton campaign from day

[1:26] one, Richard Trulo. Hi Dan. Quite a

[1:29] moment indeed. Bill Clinton, if uh for

[1:32] those who are not too familiar with the

[1:34] geography of the west side of New York,

[1:35] has got about a five or six block uh

[1:37] fairly short walk down here to the

[1:39] garden. After he uh arrives at Madison

[1:41] Square Garden, we understand he is going

[1:43] into the hall. He will go to the

[1:45] Arkansas delegation. There'll be quite a

[1:48] crowd, I expect, for him to get through.

[1:50] And uh he's going to try to go to the

[1:52] podium telephone at the delegation and

[1:54] call his mother. Virginia Kelly, who's

[1:57] up in one of the skyboxes coming all the

[1:59] way from Hot Springs to see this moment.

[2:01] So, Bill Clinton, Dan, is one boy who

[2:03] does call his mother.

[2:05] >> Well, that's true, Richard. And the

[2:07] story now has been told a number of

[2:09] times, but still a lot of people don't

[2:10] know it. I was talking earlier this

[2:12] evening with Bill Clinton's mother who

[2:14] came up to the CBS anchor booth way

[2:17] upstairs a long way from where we are

[2:19] now down on the garden floor and on the

[2:21] periphery of the garden floor and Bill

[2:24] Clinton's mother was saying that she

[2:26] said you know Dan I like to go to the

[2:28] racetrack I like to go regularly but

[2:29] very early on I took Bill to the

[2:32] racetrack he was a quick learner

[2:34] and she said maybe I shouldn't have but

[2:37] uh I got him to bet $4 $1 on each horse

[2:40] he lost it

[2:41] And he told me right then after he lost

[2:43] the last of the $4 dollars, "Mama, I'm

[2:45] going home. I don't like this." And she

[2:47] said, "You know, he's never been back."

[2:50] >> I think that's probably very good news

[2:51] for people who are worrying about what

[2:53] Bill Clinton may do about the deficit if

[2:55] he's president. One other thing we

[2:57] should mention, uh, you were talking

[2:58] about the Arkansas Travelers over at

[3:00] Macy Sellers. Who are they? Well, there

[3:02] three or 400 people, old friends of Bill

[3:05] Clinton's who have been a kind of

[3:06] gorilla strike force for him throughout

[3:09] the primaries. uh on their own hook.

[3:11] They came up to help him when he needed

[3:12] it in New Hampshire. They were there

[3:14] when he needed it in New York, in

[3:15] Indiana, and California. There are

[3:18] people uh uh like Ted Leopoulos, his

[3:21] oldest friend from Grammar School who

[3:23] went jogging with him this morning. Uh

[3:26] and people like Linda Bworth Thomasson,

[3:28] an old friend from Arkansas, executive

[3:30] producer of Designing Women, and who

[3:32] will produce his biography movie

[3:34] tomorrow night. So, they've been

[3:36] instrumental uh in large part in in his

[3:39] victory. So this is a celebration both

[3:40] for him and for them.

[3:42] >> Vic, the pictures we're seeing now, the

[3:44] Clintons have stepped into an automobile

[3:46] because that is the car that will bring

[3:48] him up the ramp to Madison Square Garden

[3:51] as a special ramp. Part of this is for

[3:53] security reasons, but give them credit.

[3:57] Bill Clinton, who features himself a

[4:00] walker as well as a runner, wanted to

[4:02] walk the streets of New York. The

[4:05] Clintons are no stranger to New York

[4:07] City. Over the years when Bill Clinton

[4:10] was attorney general of Arkansas and

[4:12] later governor of the state, they'd come

[4:14] here fairly often frequently on state

[4:16] business. I know once not oh three or

[4:20] four years ago

[4:22] ran across the Clintons having lunch one

[4:24] day on the east side of Manhattan.

[4:28] So, as uh Bill and Hillary and their

[4:32] daughter Kelch Huntton driving the

[4:35] automobile up the ramp to Madison Square

[4:37] Garden, we bring you up to date on the

[4:39] news such as it is.

[4:41] Ross Perau has canceled his travel

[4:43] schedule indefinitely. No announcement

[4:46] as to why. Ed Rollins has left the Perau

[4:49] camp.

[4:53] Nobody quite knows what Ross Perau is up

[4:55] to next. There's a lot of talk that he

[4:57] may be about to announce his economic

[4:59] plan. A lot of speculation around the

[5:01] garden floor tonight that maybe Ross

[5:02] Perau had decided not to get in. But the

[5:05] fact of the matter is, as has been

[5:07] demonstrated so many times, Ross Perau

[5:09] is his own man. He and perhaps only he

[5:11] knows what he's thinking, what he plans

[5:13] to do at this moment. What we plan to do

[5:15] at this moment is check in with Ed

[5:16] Bradley in the District of Columbia

[5:17] delegation. Ed.

[5:19] >> Uh Dan, the District of Columbia

[5:21] delegation is sort of spilling over to

[5:23] all edges of the floor. In fact, I'm not

[5:25] sure this is the District of Columbia

[5:26] anymore. When people heard that, you

[5:28] hear it now, people shouting, "We want

[5:30] Bill." When they heard Bill Clinton was

[5:32] coming into the auditorium, they saw his

[5:34] picture on the screens here in Madison

[5:36] Square Garden. People just started

[5:38] coming down from the Raptors and this

[5:40] whole area has been covered. There's

[5:42] really a sense of enthusiasm that has

[5:44] been generated and I think building

[5:46] slowly each night of this convention.

[5:48] And if it's going to continue tomorrow,

[5:50] I think that the Democrats would say one

[5:52] that Bill Clinton and his staff

[5:55] organized a convention just the way it

[5:57] is that they pulled it off and did a

[6:00] good job.

[6:00] >> You suppose we could get a release. It's

[6:02] starting to rain here.

[6:07] >> Yeah. Ed Bradley just outside the

[6:09] Washington DC delegation. And the hall

[6:11] erupts as the word spreads that the

[6:13] Clintons are now getting out of the car

[6:16] which has brought them to a an area just

[6:19] off the floor.

[6:22] So the band plays with new zeal and the

[6:26] crowd takes on another burst of energy.

[6:34] Bill Clinton will give his acceptance

[6:36] speech tomorrow night here in the garden

[6:39] and talk about the pressure being on.

[6:45] Is there anybody who does not remember

[6:47] the 1988 Democratic convention when Bill

[6:49] Clinton, who had a reputation as a hot

[6:51] young comer and one hell of a speech

[6:54] maker, gave a speech that, well, there's

[6:56] no other word for it. It flopped. It

[6:58] bombed.

[7:01] He went on the Johnny Carson show not

[7:03] long after that to explain himself

[7:07] and part of his explanation was look I

[7:10] gave the speech that Michael Dukakus and

[7:12] his group wanted me to give.

[7:18] that Bill Clinton for months has been

[7:19] telling himself and telling those around

[7:21] him that if he's to win this election,

[7:23] he absolutely positively

[7:26] and without exception must deliver at

[7:28] least a very good acceptance speech.

[7:33] And you can bet the ranch that he's

[7:34] hoping to deliver a great one.

[7:43] Hillary Clinton holding hands with her

[7:45] husband and her daughter, Hillary

[7:46] Clinton, who has

[7:49] changed her campaign style and the

[7:50] profile of herself in the campaign after

[7:53] what Governor Clinton told me this

[7:54] afternoon in my conversation with him

[7:56] was, and I quote him now, some

[7:58] self-inflicted wounds from the campaign

[8:00] earlier.

[8:03] Governor Clinton also spoke about

[8:07] the possibility that Hillary Hillary

[8:11] Clinton will not be as quiet once the

[8:14] campaign really gets rolling as she has

[8:15] been comparatively over these last

[8:20] few weeks. The Clinton stopped to say

[8:22] hello to the Democratic candidate for

[8:25] the United States Senate in

[8:28] Illinois.

[8:32] And having done that, move on. Governor

[8:36] Clinton wanted one of the themes of this

[8:37] convention to be in the and the first

[8:39] night it was and lapped on into the

[8:42] second night. One of the themes being

[8:43] this is the year for women and we

[8:47] Democrats, this was his self-crafted,

[8:51] carefully crafted theme. We Democrats

[8:55] are the party of women. The Republicans

[8:57] of course have another view of that and

[8:58] they'll be putting their view of it

[9:00] forward at the Republican National

[9:01] Convention in Houston in the middle of

[9:04] next month. But this is the Democrats

[9:06] hour. This is their time to put forward

[9:08] their messages.

[9:10] And into the garden

[9:13] they come.

[9:28] shot.

[9:41] What a scene here in the garden. What a

[9:44] scene here in the garden.

[9:46] We want Bill. We thank Governor Clinton,

[9:49] his wife, and his daughter are being

[9:50] brought to position just behind the

[9:53] podium up here at the moment. No one can

[9:54] be sure of that right now. But look out

[9:56] on this sea of people. Great light show

[10:00] and the music.

[10:32] just

[10:37] come back.

[10:43] >> I know. I know.

[10:59] And having come through the area just

[11:01] behind and below the podium, they plunge

[11:03] into the Arkansas delegation.

[11:25] Bill Clinton is one of those politicians

[11:27] who prides himself on being

[11:30] a toucher, a hugger,

[11:33] >> a people toucher.

[11:35] >> Some politicians are, some are not.

[11:37] >> We're not closed. He's gone through the

[11:39] door.

[11:44] And sometimes it works for a candidate

[11:46] and sometimes it doesn't.

[11:54] Bill Clinton also prides himself on

[11:56] being in the faggotable

[11:59] as are most people who reach the top in

[12:01] politics or for that matter perhaps

[12:02] anywhere else. But with Bill Clinton,

[12:04] it's hard to have a conversation with

[12:05] him and not have him talk about work.

[12:09] said several times today, listen, people

[12:11] can accuse me of a lot of things and

[12:12] they can think what they will of me, but

[12:15] said Bill Clinton, I don't think anybody

[12:17] ever said that I don't work hard.

[12:28] Of

[12:38] course, once the tumult and the shouting

[12:41] dies down, once this convention is over,

[12:43] the question will be from where do the

[12:45] votes come? Clinton's strategy, among

[12:49] others, is to go to the malls, go to the

[12:52] suburbs, and fight for the votes that he

[12:55] figures once were Democratic, but in

[12:57] recent elections been going to Reagan

[12:59] and Bush.

[13:01] Let's go now to Charles Caralt up on

[13:04] high so for perspective. Charlie,

[13:08] this is a great site, isn't it, Dan? the

[13:10] uh the nominee among his folks down

[13:13] there in the uh Arkansas delegation.

[13:17] We should probably explain to people at

[13:19] home that the people here in the hall

[13:22] have been seeing the same pictures they

[13:24] have as the Clintons made their way to

[13:27] Madison Square Garden and down the

[13:30] corridors and into the crowd. There are

[13:32] three great huge television sets,

[13:37] television screens. This being a

[13:39] thoroughly modern convention. And so the

[13:42] reaction in the hall is to the very same

[13:44] pictures that people are seeing at home.

[13:48] Everybody in this crowd at all can can

[13:51] enjoy the scene of

[13:55] Governor Clinton with the people who

[13:58] started him on the road this evening and

[14:00] the Arkansas delegation. Charles, you

[14:02] you know the garden well coming here as

[14:05] often as as you and I do. What some

[14:08] people don't realize about Madison

[14:09] Square Garden is that that as big time

[14:12] indoor big event facilities go, it's not

[14:15] all that large. For basketball,

[14:18] maybe 19,000. Here's the point. The

[14:21] sound reverberates through this

[14:24] placement. And it it's doing it now in

[14:26] which you can almost feel the walls

[14:29] quake. It's it's that kind of indoor

[14:32] facility.

[14:33] And it's

[14:36] we've all seen those seats from one time

[14:37] or another. Let's say the Knicks get hot

[14:40] in here and the place just reverberates

[14:42] with we will rock you tonight. It

[14:45] reverberates with Bill Bill.

[14:56] Some people get into politics late, some

[14:58] get in early, some in between. for Bill

[15:00] Clinton. He's never made any secret of

[15:03] it. He's dreamed of this moment since he

[15:05] was a kid.

[15:07] Ron Brown, Democratic National

[15:11] Committee chairman, just off to the

[15:13] side, you see, with a great smile on his

[15:15] face.

[15:20] Ron Brown, who

[15:24] has put this together,

[15:26] said he wanted the Democrats to settle

[15:28] on the candidate early. They did. Not

[15:30] quite as early as Ron Brown might have

[15:32] liked. Nearly everybody gives Ron Brown

[15:33] great credit for holding the Democrats

[15:37] together, particularly working behind

[15:40] the scenes with the likes of the

[15:41] Reverend Jesse Jackson and Governor Mary

[15:43] Cuomo. Mario Cuomo.

[15:47] Cuomo set the stage tonight.

[15:51] tremendously effective nominating

[15:53] address.

[15:55] Then the roll call, it goes over the

[15:57] top. Had the seconding speeches by

[15:59] Maxine Waters, David Mccertie of

[16:01] Oklahoma, Waters of California. And once

[16:05] it was over the top of the Ohio

[16:06] delegation taking it there,

[16:09] then the Clintons

[16:12] left the celebration of Macy's

[16:14] department store with their Arkansas

[16:15] travelers. Walked on the street, then

[16:18] got in the car, came here to the garden.

[16:23] Ladies and gentlemen, the president of

[16:26] the United States,

[16:28] Clinton of Arkansas.

[16:33] Well, you've heard the great balloon

[16:35] drops at these conventions. Sure. Every

[16:37] convention has them. Now we have the

[16:38] great litter drop. Well, hi-tech moves

[16:41] on.

[16:49] What Governor Clinton has indicated the

[16:52] next lady

[16:53] >> that he intends to do, Hillary Clinton.

[16:57] Well,

[16:58] >> let's hold it for a moment.

[17:07] We thought maybe somebody had a

[17:08] microphone right up there close to him

[17:10] where everybody could hear him.

[17:13] Looks like that now is going to be the

[17:14] case.

[17:22] Thank you. Thank you.

[17:25] Thank you.

[17:28] The rules of this convention

[17:31] preclude my acceptance tonight.

[17:36] But 32 years ago,

[17:39] another young candidate who wanted to

[17:42] get this country moving again came to

[17:45] the convention to say a simple thank

[17:47] you.

[17:56] And so

[18:00] I want to thank Dave McCertie and Maxine

[18:04] Waters and magnificent Mario Cuomo for

[18:07] putting my name and nomination tonight.

[18:19] I want to thank you all for being here

[18:21] and loving your country and to tell you

[18:23] that tomorrow night I will be the

[18:26] comeback kid. Good night and God bless

[18:29] you all. Thank you.

[18:48] Heat up

[19:09] here.

[19:22] And of course, the

[19:24] young president to be Bill Clinton

[19:26] referred to, the one who 32 years ago

[19:29] came to the convention the night before

[19:31] his

[19:33] acceptance address was the late

[19:35] President John F. Kennedy.

[19:40] But as Bill Clinton makes his way out of

[19:43] the hall,

[19:45] pressing the fresh, waving,

[19:48] having his moment of victory, triumph,

[19:52] and glory here,

[19:54] and preparing to go back and who knows,

[19:57] maybe do a little one last practice for

[20:00] this day of his speech for tomorrow

[20:02] night here at Madison Square Garden, his

[20:04] acceptance address.

[20:07] Let's bring in Kevin Phillips and Joe

[20:10] Klein.

[20:12] We've talked Kevin and Joe about the

[20:16] possibilities. If Clinton unquestionably

[20:19] is on the move, who knows how long it

[20:21] will last. Polls indicated from almost

[20:24] every indicator.

[20:26] Uh he's moving up, moving up fast. What

[20:29] does he need to do to keep that

[20:31] momentum, build on that momentum, and

[20:33] win? First of all, Joe Klein, let's talk

[20:36] about the downside. There a lot of

[20:38] dangers up ahead for him.

[20:39] >> Oh, yeah. Dan, in the 30 years since

[20:42] presidential politics became this

[20:44] complicated game where we have to go

[20:45] through all the jumps, through all the

[20:47] primaries, deal with us, deal with uh

[20:50] making commercials, uh only one person

[20:53] has won it on his first p time around

[20:55] the track. That was Jimmy Carter. Didn't

[20:57] turn out too well. Bill Clinton is

[20:59] trying to do the impossible. But, you

[21:01] know, looking on this amazing scene

[21:02] tonight, I I keep my thoughts keep on

[21:04] going back to seeing him in in New

[21:07] Hampshire, broken, exhausted, sick as a

[21:11] dog the night before the primary. And I

[21:13] remember he said to me then, "I've done

[21:15] all I can. I I'm at peace." I don't

[21:18] think at that moment he could have ever

[21:19] imagined that he'd be here tonight.

[21:22] And as we see, Governor Clinton with the

[21:26] National Committee Chairman Ron Brown

[21:27] just behind him moving off of the

[21:30] podium.

[21:33] Going to pause for a second to

[21:36] see if we can get a microphone in there.

[21:39] Bob Shever is there. Bob. Hey, Governor.

[21:42] He is very near. Governor,

[21:47] >> I'm so grateful.

[21:53] Well, it's the end of a lot of effort by

[21:56] thousands of people, but overwhelmingly

[21:57] I just feel gratitude and determination

[22:00] to make the most of this opportunity for

[22:01] the country.

[22:02] >> Are you looking forward to tomorrow

[22:03] night?

[22:03] >> I'm looking forward to it very much.

[22:06] >> So, Governor Wy, has it really sunk in

[22:08] on you that that this has happened?

[22:10] >> I don't think so. I just feel so

[22:13] grateful to have had a chance to do this

[22:16] and I feel a keen sense of determination

[22:18] to make the most of it now to do

[22:20] something for the people.

[22:20] >> There must have been times along the way

[22:22] when you didn't think this might not

[22:23] happen.

[22:24] >> Lots of times. Thank lots of times along

[22:27] the way, but we just kind of kept going

[22:29] and it worked out. What was the lowest

[22:31] point for you?

[22:33] >> It's hard to say. There were a couple

[22:35] that were pretty low, but it's high

[22:36] tonight. Congratulations, Governor. what

[22:39] you think about. You know, I never let

[22:41] myself think about it really. I just I

[22:44] just tried to help Bill and I tried to

[22:46] get up every day and just try to do what

[22:48] we thought was the right thing to do. I

[22:49] never really let myself think about it.

[22:51] >> Thank you.

[22:52] >> How do you feel about your dad?

[22:54] >> I'm very excited.

[22:55] >> Are you

[22:57] >> Did you ever think this would happen?

[22:59] >> I dreamed.

[23:01] >> So, Mrs. Clinton, what what role will

[23:03] you have in the county?

[23:04] >> Same thing I've been doing. just try to

[23:06] get out there and represent my husband

[23:07] and represent the issues that he and I

[23:09] and millions of other Americans care

[23:11] about and try to do what we can to turn

[23:14] the country around in the right

[23:15] direction.

[23:19] >> Well, Bob Schiffer, both Governor

[23:21] Clinton and Mrs. Clinton, I think Bob

[23:23] has just lost his headset and that melee

[23:25] there. Bob is very well positioned, but

[23:27] in the nature of journalism, anybody

[23:30] who's got position doesn't hold it very

[23:31] long. Very nice job of Bob Sheffer and

[23:33] others up on the podium talking to the

[23:36] relaxed, confident, and very experienced

[23:38] campaign team of Bill Clinton and

[23:41] Hillary Clinton. You just heard Mrs.

[23:43] Clinton feel the question very well

[23:45] about what he going to do in the

[23:46] campaign. She says in effect, well, I'm

[23:48] going to keep on doing what I have been

[23:50] doing. We'll see. We were talking

[23:52] earlier with Joe Klein and Kevin

[23:54] Phillips. Very quickly, Kevin Phillips,

[23:56] your thoughts here just before we wrap

[23:59] this up. you've watched this tonight.

[24:01] Uh, politics is full of mirages and

[24:05] illusions. Is this a mirage and illusion

[24:07] for Bill Clinton that yes, yes, it

[24:10] could, just could be that I could unseat

[24:12] an incumbent president.

[24:14] >> Well, I think it could be a mirage

[24:16] several ways. I mean, first of all, you

[24:18] have always the possibility of some

[24:20] unexpected revelation or or squabble or

[24:24] personal situation. Certainly, the

[24:26] Republicans have it in mind to keep that

[24:28] pressure up. Secondly, if Ross Perau

[24:30] gets out of this race, all of a sudden,

[24:32] Bill Clinton is in a situation where

[24:34] he's going to be headto-head with George

[24:35] Bush in the South, and the whole

[24:37] question of the Clinton Gore strategy is

[24:39] going to be put under the microscope.

[24:41] So, there could be a mirage here, but

[24:43] there's certainly a lot of reason to be

[24:44] happy tonight.

[24:46] >> And speaking of Ross Perau, let's go uh

[24:49] quickly. Well, we we're going to make a

[24:52] switch, but I don't think we can do it,

[24:53] as it turns out. Well, Bill Clinton,

[24:55] Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton are now

[24:57] beginning to leave Madison Square

[24:59] Garden. What a night here. Terrific

[25:01] speech by Mario Cuomo. Uh the Clintons

[25:04] come into the hall. Bill Clinton again

[25:08] conjures up the memory of the time of

[25:10] the Kennedys believing that he and Al

[25:14] Gore Jr. form at least a slight

[25:16] Kennedyes ticket. That's their hope.

[25:19] Anyway, we'll have all the latest about

[25:21] the convention on your late local news

[25:25] which will coming up here very shortly.

[25:27] Also later on the CBS news program up to

[25:29] the minute and of course Bazison and

[25:31] Harry Smith will have a lot of follow on

[25:33] followup and detail on CBS this morning

[25:37] for all of us here at CBS News from

[25:40] Madison Square Garden. Dan Rather, good

[25:43] night.

[26:01] Stay with CBS News for continuing

[26:03] coverage of the Democratic National

[26:05] Convention.

[26:11] Experience CBS News.

[26:16] This is CBS.

[26:19] >> You can't change how you get clothes

[26:21] dirty. But with Whisk Power Scoop, you

[26:24] can clean them like never before. You

[26:26] see, oils from your body work like glue

[26:28] to lock dirt in. Most detergents can't

[26:31] get that tough, oily dirt all the way

[26:33] out. Whisk is the only detergent with an

[26:36] organic cleaning system that actually

[26:38] unlocks those oils to release the dirt,

[26:40] so your clothes are cleaner. They're not

[26:42] yellow or dingy. Try Whisk Powers Scoop

[26:45] and change what you mean by clean.

[26:49] Dave Thomas's daughter Wendy loves ranch

[26:51] dressing. So Dave rustled up a delicious

[26:54] new sandwich. Wendy's Monterey Ranch

[26:56] Chicken Sandwich. It's a whole chicken

[26:58] breast fillet with cheese. But not just

[27:00] any cheese, Monterey Jack. And to top it

[27:03] off, he cooked up a ranch dressing with

[27:05] an extra special touch. Real bacon. The

[27:08] Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich. A great

[27:10] new taste you can only find at Wendy's.

[27:13] Hey, Wendy.

[27:15] Oh, well, I guess I have to eat it

[27:18] myself.

[27:19] >> I love watermelon.

[27:22] >> I love the seeds.

[27:25] >> Remember what mom said.

[27:27] >> What?

[27:28] >> Eat the seeds. A great big watermelon

[27:30] will grow in your stomach.

[27:32] >> Will not.

[27:32] >> Will do. Will not. Will do.

[27:35] >> Will not.
