[0:00] Heartland. President Bush has wrapped up
[0:02] a three-state push for his immigration
[0:04] proposals. In Omaha today, he called for
[0:07] tougher steps to keep illegal immigrants
[0:09] out of this country, but he also called
[0:11] for measures that would help others
[0:13] assimilate into American society. In
[0:16] California, meantime, a tough stance at
[0:17] immigration helps a Republican keep a
[0:20] congressional seat in a Republican
[0:22] district. It's a signal that the border
[0:24] battle may be a battle cry in this
[0:27] year's elections. Our White House
[0:29] correspondent Ed Henry is standing by.

[0:53] Victory for Brian Bilbury means survival
[0:56] for Republicans in their first big
[0:57] midterm election test. But the
[0:59] California race offers sobering lessons
[1:01] for both the president and his party,
[1:03] beginning with immigration politics.
[1:05] >> The president proposing amnesty was
[1:07] absolutely a big problem.
[1:09] >> As the count broke his way overnight,
[1:11] Bill Bray told CNN he won because of his
[1:13] vehement opposition to the president's
[1:14] call for a guest worker program, putting
[1:16] millions of illegal immigrants on a path
[1:18] to citizenship. Now, Bill Bray says he
[1:21] will urge other Republicans to copy his
[1:23] tough elect
