[0:04] At least 80 Iraqi warplanes flown to
[0:07] safety in Iran. Another scut attack on
[0:09] Israel. Report. No injuries. And the
[0:12] start of the battle against the largest
[0:14] oil spill in history.
[0:18] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:21] reporting tonight with a special war
[0:22] update edition. Good evening. Day 13 of
[0:26] the Gulf War brought gains for US and
[0:28] allied forces on both offense and
[0:29] defense. US military officials say
[0:32] they've choked off the oil spewing into
[0:34] the Persian Gulf. Allied forces also
[0:36] shot down four more Iraqi warplanes and
[0:39] scores of Iraq's best planes and pilots
[0:42] mysteriously fled into what is supposed
[0:44] to be neutral Iran. They may be there to
[0:47] sit out the war. Iraq claims 320
[0:50] civilians have been killed by Allied
[0:52] bombing and some captive pilots being
[0:55] held as human shields Iraq says have
[0:57] been wounded. Saddam Hussein fired more
[0:59] Scud missiles at Israel and Saudi
[1:01] Arabia. They did no serious damage. Our
[1:04] coverage begins with David Martin at the
[1:06] Pentagon with more now about those Iraqi
[1:08] air force planes flying to Iran by the
[1:11] dozens. David. Dan. What was once a
[1:14] trickle of Iraqi aircraft fleeing to
[1:16] airfields in Iran has turned into an
[1:19] exodus. At last count, more than 80
[1:21] Iraqi planes, many of them
[1:23] top-of-the-line fighters, were parked on
[1:25] Iranian runways. That's about 10% of the
[1:28] Iraqi Air Force.
[1:30] >> Uh we're delighted to see that because
[1:31] every one of those aircraft that leaves
[1:34] Iraq is one less that we will have to
[1:36] engage in combat.
[1:37] >> Iran has promised the State Department
[1:39] the planes will not fight agai
