[0:04] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:08] with Dan Rather and Connie Chung.
[0:12] >> Good evening. Police on two continents
[0:14] are investigating and trying to
[0:16] understand what appears to be a bizarre
[0:18] doomsday scenario.
[0:20] >> It's a scene reminiscent of the horrors
[0:22] of Waco and Jonestown. 48 people,
[0:25] including some children, were found dead
[0:27] today in the burning rubble of four
[0:29] buildings in Switzerland. The victims
[0:31] were connected to a religious cult based
[0:32] in Canada with a fugitive leader who was
[0:35] preparing them for the end of the world.
[0:37] CBS News correspondent Barry Peterson
[0:39] reports from Switzerland.
[0:41] >> It was a horrifying discovery in the
[0:43] gentle Swiss countryside. Members of a
[0:46] religious sect killing themselves and
[0:48] each other in ski chalets in the
[0:50] mountains. Death came mostly by fire.
[0:53] But at this farmhouse in Sheree, one
[0:55] group of 19 dressed in black and red
[0:57] robes with crosses. They were then shot
[1:00] execution style. Some had plastic bags
[1:03] over their heads. Their bodies were
[1:05] spread out in a circle and amazingly
[1:07] untouched by the flames. One official
[1:09] called it a wax museum of death.
[1:12] >> The bodies were not burned. They were uh
[1:15] they were more more or less clear. Uh
[1:19] everything was
[1:22] peaceful.
[1:23] >> Their rituals mimicking the Catholic
[1:25] Church, the
[1:26] >> the me masses with the communion,
[1:30] with the
[1:31] prayers, the the praise, with the
[1:34] lecture of the Bible, the New Testament,
[1:39] uh with the pray to uh the Virgin.
[1:44] >> Answers may lie. In Canada, there was
[1:47] another fatal arson fire in a house
[1:49] outside Montreal hours before the Swiss
[1:51] tragedy.
