[0:00] Grandma Ethel and Grandpa Sam. Your
[0:02] cholesterol doesn't just come from food.
[0:04] It also has a lot to do with family
[0:06] history. Today, there's Vtorine. When
[0:08] diet and exercise aren't enough, adding
[0:10] Vytorin can help. Vtorin is a new
[0:13] product that treats the two sources of
[0:14] cholesterol. Cholesterol from food and
[0:17] the cholesterol your body makes
[0:18] naturally based on family history.
[0:20] Vtorin lowers bad cholesterol 45 to 60%.
[0:24] Vtorin is not for everyone, including
[0:26] people with liver problems, women who
[0:28] are nursing, pregnant, or may become
[0:30] pregnant. Unexplained muscle pain or
[0:31] weakness could be a sign of a rare but
[0:33] serious side effect. Vtorin may interact
[0:35] with other medicines or certain foods,
[0:37] increasing your risk of getting this
[0:38] serious side effect. Simple blood tests
[0:40] are needed to check for liver problems.
[0:42] Ask your doctor about new Vtorin. Your
[0:44] cholesterol comes from two sources.
[0:46] Treat them both with Vtorin.
[0:52] 66,000 people
[0:54] in 50 countries and every day a
[0:58] twoperson financial operation.
[1:01] You and us, UBS.
[1:04] Inside every can of Minwax is the secret
[1:07] to enhancing wood's natural beauty.
[1:09] Minwax rich wood stains and long lasting
[1:12] protective finishes make it easy to turn
[1:14] any house into a beautiful home. Minwax,
[1:16] making wood beautiful for 100 years.
[1:23] President Bush and Senator Kerry were
[1:25] hoping tonight to win over some of the
[1:26] uncommitted voters. Did they? CBS News
[1:29] assembled a nationwide panel of fence
[1:32] setitting voters. And as they watched
[1:34] the face off tonight, we at CBS News
[1:36] monitored electronically their
[1:38] reactions. CBS News correspondent
[1:40] Anthony Mason joins us now with the
[1:42] results of this quick poll, if you will.
[1:45] Anthony.
[1:45] >> Dan, this was an Insta poll. Literally,
[1:47] we asked our 200 respondents right after
[1:50] the debate was over to tell us who they
[1:51] thought won. There was a very strong
[1:53] conclusion from this debate, as you'll
[1:55] see when we go to the boards right now.
[1:57] 44% said they thought John Kerry won
[1:59] this debate. 26% said George Bush did a
[2:02] tie 30%. Throughout this debate, Dan, um
[2:06] we've been monitoring the reaction of
[2:07] these 200 fence sitters. Um these are
[2:10] voters from across the country. We
[2:11] watched them moment by moment. They
[2:13] watched the debate on web TV and
[2:14] registered their approval or disapproval
[2:17] on a sliding scale. This was a
[2:19] nationally representative survey of
[2:21] uncommitted before the debate. 70% of
[2:23] these people said to us they felt the
[2:25] country was on the wrong track, but only
[2:27] 14% said they had a favorable opinion of
[2:29] John Kerry. John Ky appeared to score
[2:32] the highest ratings tonight when he
[2:33] described his plans for Iraq. Now watch
[2:35] the meter move up here.
[2:38] We need to be smarter about how we wage
[2:41] a war on terror. We need to deny them
[2:43] the recruits. We need to deny them the
[2:45] safe havens. We need to rebuild our
[2:47] alliances.
[2:50] >> Now, that two reading on the meter you
[2:51] saw there was about as high as anybody
[2:53] got tonight. Now, moments later, after
[2:54] Kerry spoke, when President Bush
[2:56] responded, the meter abruptly dropped,
[2:58] and the average response from our
[3:00] uncommitteds actually briefly went
[3:02] negative. Watch.
[3:04] >> I decided the right action was in Iraq.
[3:07] My opponent calls it a mistake. It
[3:09] wasn't a mistake. He said I misled on
[3:11] Iraq. I don't think he was misleading
[3:13] when he called Iraq a grave threat in
[3:14] the fall of 2002.
[3:16] >> Now, President Bush did score with our
[3:18] panel of fence hitters when he talked
[3:20] about a free Iraq. Watch this.
[3:22] >> An enemy realizes the stakes.
[3:25] The enemy understands a free Iraq will
[3:28] be a major defeat
[3:30] in their ideology of hatred.
[3:33] That's why they're fighting so
[3:34] viciferously.
[3:36] Now, John Kerry was concerned going into
[3:38] this debate that he portray he have a
[3:40] plan about Iraq. From our uncommitted
[3:42] voters, he has scored well. Right now,
[3:45] 51% of those voters have told us, and
[3:47] these are uncommitted voters again in a
[3:49] sample across the country, 200, we have
[3:51] a margin of error of plus or six or
[3:53] seven points, plus or minus. But John Ky
[3:55] got a 51% score here on having a clear
[3:58] plan for Iraq. George Bush just 38%. Now
[4:01] we asked these same group, has your
[4:03] opinion of John Kerry changed? 52% said
[4:06] their opinion of John Kerry had
[4:08] improved. It had changed for the better.
[4:10] 14% said it got worse. 35% no change at
[4:14] all. Throughout the night, this meter
[4:16] Dan showed that overall John Kerry was
[4:19] scoring better than George Bush and he
[4:21] was scoring even better among women. The
[4:23] ratings from women were stronger than
[4:24] men. But pretty clearly among these
[4:27] uncommitteds, again a sample of 200
[4:29] voters across the country, a
[4:31] representative national sample, this
[4:32] debate went to John Kerry.
[4:34] >> Anthony Mason, thanks. Bob Schiffer,
[4:36] this is an unscientific poll, 200
[4:38] people, it may or may not be, but if it
[4:41] turns out tomorrow that a wider sampling
[4:43] shows that Senator Kerry scored better
[4:46] than George Bush, what are the chances
[4:49] of making any real difference in the
[4:50] race?
[4:51] >> Well, it will keep John Kerry in the
[4:53] race. I think you'd have to say that and
[4:56] we don't know uh I don't know what to
[4:58] make of these poll numbers when I look
[4:59] at them. But if in fact uh this poll uh
[5:03] is correct, then John Kerry has
[5:05] accomplished something that was one of
[5:07] his major goals and that was people
[5:09] simply didn't know where he stood on
[5:12] Iraq. People simply didn't know what his
[5:15] positions were on some of these key
[5:17] issues. If this poll is right, he got it
[5:19] across tonight what he believes about
[5:22] Iraq and people seem to like what he had
[5:24] to say.
[5:24] >> Bob Schiffer, CBS News coverage of the
[5:26] first presidential showdown of
[5:28] Campaign04 will continue in just a
[5:30] moment.
[5:38] >> You know about Previsid.
[5:40] Did you know there's also Previsid
[5:42] Solutab that disintegrates in your
[5:44] mouth? You do now.
