[0:05] Gorbachev warns the allies they are
[0:07] going too far.
[0:09] And the US military maps plans for a
[0:11] ground war sooner [music] or later.
[0:17] >> [music]
[0:18] >> This is the CBS Evening News, Bob
[0:20] Schieffer reporting.
[0:22] Good evening. New diplomatic efforts to
[0:24] end the war in the Persian Gulf may be
[0:26] underway tonight. Soviet President
[0:28] Gorbachev said in Moscow he is sending
[0:30] his own envoy to Baghdad for talks with
[0:33] Saddam Hussein. He coupled that
[0:35] announcement with a charge that allied
[0:36] military operations may have gone too

[1:07] Soviet Foreign Minister was only hinting
[1:09] at what Gorbachev said today that the
[1:11] allied attacks against Iraq were going
[1:13] beyond the scope of the United Nations
[1:15] resolution. And at that time Secretary
[1:17] Baker and Soviet Foreign Minister
[1:19] Besmertnik met and they agreed here in
[1:22] Washington on a joint statement which
[1:24] emphasized among other things that the
[1:26] coalition was seeking the liberation of
[1:28] Kuwait and not the destruction of Iraq.
[1:31] Now we have Gorbachev himself saying it
[1:33] an
