[0:01] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:05] with Connie Chung in Los Angeles and Dan
[0:08] Rather in Hopewell Township,
[0:10] Pennsylvania.
[0:12] Good evening. Twilight Time in
[0:14] Pittsburgh. At this hour, investigators
[0:17] out there over that bridge behind me are
[0:19] hard at work piecing together clues in
[0:22] the mystery crash of US Airflight 427.
[0:25] Just getting to the crash site is so
[0:27] difficult, everyone except investigators
[0:30] is supposed to be confined to this
[0:31] makeshift command site in a mall parking
[0:34] lot. Here's what we know. The Boeing
[0:36] built jetliner was headed from Chicago
[0:39] to Florida last night with a scheduled
[0:41] stop at the Pittsburgh International
[0:43] Airport just a few miles southeast of
[0:45] here. Instead, the plane plowed straight
[0:48] down into the ground here in Beaver
[0:50] County in very rough and rocky terrain.
[0:54] The weather was clear, communications
[0:56] were normal. There were 132 people on
[0:59] board, no survivors. It is the nation's
[1:02] deadliest air crash in 7 years, the
[1:04] fifth for the company US Air in just 5
[1:07] years. CBS News correspondent Bob our
[1:10] begins our coverage.
[1:13] This is all that's left of US Airflight
[1:15] 427. A horrifying scene of carnage and
[1:18] debris scattered on a rural Pennsylvania
[1:20] hillside. A jetliner, which carried 132
[1:23] people, shredded into pieces, no bigger
[1:25] than a car door. The Boeing 737 in route
[1:28] from Chicago to West Palm Beach, was
[1:30] approaching an intermediate stop in
[1:32] Pittsburgh when it just dropped out of
[1:34] the sky.
[1:34] >> And I said, "Oh my god, look at the
[1:35] plane." We looked up and it looked like,
[1:37] you know, it was smoke and stuff and it
[1:38] just
