[0:00] I know.
[0:03] From around the world and from CBS News
[0:06] headquarters in New York, this is the
[0:09] CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.
[0:12] Good evening. Like most tragedies, it
[0:14] has more than one act. First, there was
[0:17] yesterday's crash of an Air Florida
[0:18] jetliner into the ice-covered Potomac
[0:21] River
[0:22] moments after taking off from
[0:23] Washington's National Airport. The
[0:24] Boeing 737 hit the snow-shrouded 14th
[0:27] Street Bridge, which was crowded with
[0:29] commuters. At least 74 passengers and
[0:32] crew died, so did three motorists.
[0:35] Divers today searched for 65 bodies
[0:38] still trapped in the fuselage that's
[0:40] become a crypt under 25 ft of black
[0:42] water.
[0:43] But the final revelation of this
[0:44] tragedy, discovering the cause of the
[0:46] crash, may be months away. We have two
[0:49] reports, beginning with Bob Schieffer.
[0:54] By 7:15 this morning, the big airliners
[0:57] were lifting off the National Airport
[0:58] runway once again.
[1:00] The bitter cold hung on, but the snow
[1:02] stopped overnight. The airport was
[1:04] declared open again this morning and the
[1:06] planes were taking a flight path that
[1:08] brought them directly over the site of
[1:10] yesterday's accident.
[1:12] Down below, the tedious job of picking
[1:14] up the pieces and searching for the
[1:15] bodies resumed at first light of this
[1:17] gray day.
[1:22] President Reagan personally ordered the
[1:23] government to provide whatever was
[1:25] necessary to help in the recovery.
[1:27] A huge crane was positioned not far from
[1:30] where the Air Florida plane had rammed
[1:32] into the bridge during yesterday's
[1:34] commuter rush hour.
[1:36] Okay, fine. Thank you.
[1:38] Thank you.
