[0:22] this is World News Tonight, Saturday.
[0:25] >> Good evening. I'm Bob [music] Woodruff.
[0:26] It is the worst air show disaster ever.
[0:29] A fighter jet crashed into a crowd of
[0:31] spectators in western Ukraine today
[0:33] exploding in a ball of fire. In a matter
[0:35] of seconds, 78 people were killed, more
[0:37] than a hundred others injured, many of
[0:40] them critically. And the death toll is
[0:42] expected to rise. Here's ABC's Mike Lee.
[0:46] >> It was a clear day for the air show and
[0:47] the pilot and co-pilot seemed to be in
[0:49] control until they began a low pass over
[0:52] the airfield.
[0:55] There was little anyone could do except
[0:57] try to save the injured. The plane with
[1:00] its tons of shattering metal and
[1:02] exploding fuel tanks had plowed straight
[1:04] through a large crowd of spectators.
[1:06] Dozens killed in an instant.
[1:09] >> "Everything happened in a flash," said
[1:10] the survivor. "Suddenly, I saw flames,
[1:13] people covered in blood, people
[1:14] screaming."
[1:15] Among the victims, many children. One
[1:18] man said, "I could only grab my children
[1:20] and hold on. We were thrown away and
[1:22] hands and legs were flying all around
[1:24] us. Parents were frantically searching
[1:26] for their youngsters."

[1:35] failure may have been a factor as the
[1:37] Russian-made SU-27 fighter jet came out
