[0:02] China convicts American activist Harry
[0:04] Woo of spying [music] and throws him out
[0:07] of the country. The farm belt furer. An
[0:11] American neo-Nazi is about to be sent to
[0:13] Germany where he's charged [music] with
[0:14] pedalling hate. And eye on America
[0:18] tonight. Blue heaven, a haven for
[0:20] [music] Mark Ferman and other cops
[0:23] who've had it with LA's mean streets.
[0:26] [music]
[0:28] This is the CBS Evening News with Dan
[0:32] Rather. [music]
[0:34] >> Good evening. Dan is off tonight. I'm
[0:35] John Roberts. An American human rights
[0:37] activist was tried, sentenced, then
[0:39] expelled from China today. CBS News has
[0:42] learned that a message from President
[0:44] Clinton to the Chinese leadership
[0:46] carried by California Senator Diane
[0:48] Feinstein was crucial in closing the
[0:50] case of Harry Woo. Woo is on his way
[0:53] home to California tonight. The next
[0:55] step could be a high-profile visit to
[0:57] China by First Lady Hillary Clinton.
[1:00] White House correspondent Bill Plant,
[1:01] who broke the story of Woos on this
[1:03] broadcast last night, begins our report.
[1:08] >> Before the Chinese expelled Harry Woo,
[1:10] they televised his sentencing, 15 years
[1:13] in prison on charges of espionage.
[1:18] The judge lectured and humiliated Woo,
[1:21] an apparent effort to discredit him and
[1:23] also remind the US exactly how China
[1:26] feels about Wu's brand of human rights
[1:28] activism. In California, a relieved
[1:31] Ching Lee Wu was quick to credit the
[1:33] administration with getting her husband
[1:35] released.
[1:36] >> What do you think was the greatest
[1:37] factor in gaining his release? I think
[1:40] uh the United States government really
[1:42] did a lot of things
