[0:01] This is the CBS Evening News with Morton
[0:04] Dean. Good evening. There's a mystery of
[0:07] sorts at the UN tonight. Is there
[0:09] something new about to happen concerning
[0:11] the hostages being held in Iran?
[0:13] Mitchell Kraus has this report from the
[0:15] UN.
[0:19] It's the fourth weekend in a row that UN
[0:20] delegates have gathered here either to
[0:22] discuss Iran or Afghanistan, but few
[0:25] among them are optimistic that tonight's
[0:26] proposed Security Council meeting will
[0:28] resolve the crisis that began when the
[0:30] Americans were taken hostage in Tehran
[0:32] 71 days ago. Late last night US
[0:35] Ambassador Donald McHenry echoed that
[0:37] view. He said the US agreed to another
[0:40] delay in the effort to get a vote on
[0:41] economic sanctions against Iran because

[0:45] Waldheim from Iranian authorities, but

[0:56] its meeting
[1:00] may be seen by some
[1:03] as an indication that
[1:06] there is substantial progress
[1:09] in this protracted situation.
[1:11] To leave high expectations
[1:16] would in my judgment be a cruel
[1:22] hoax.
[1:24] UN sources say that Waldheim and Iranian
[1:26] Foreign Minister Ghotbzadeh spoke by
[1:28] phone today, but there was no word on
[1:30] what was discussed. The US has made it
[1:32] clear that if there is any reason to
[1:34] believe a solution is near, it will not
[1:36] press for sanctions at any formal
[1:37] meeting of the council. A Soviet veto is
[1:40] expected, and the US is not anxious to
[1:42] make Moscow a hero at the time when
[1:44] Soviet actions next door in Afghanistan
[1:46] have angered many I
