[0:13] You are watching CBS News continuing
[0:15] coverage of Showdown in the Gulf. From
[0:18] CBS News headquarters in New York, here
[0:21] is Dan Rather. [music]
[0:23] >> The latest headlines in our continuing
[0:25] Gulf War coverage. More US F-16s headed
[0:29] for Iraq to retaliate for missile hits
[0:31] on Israel. No reported Israeli
[0:34] retaliation as yet. The Israelis say
[0:36] they maintain uh their right to do so
[0:39] sometime in the future. A key US weapon
[0:41] passes its first test in combat. A
[0:44] second US war plane may be lost. A new
[0:47] CBS News New York Times poll indicates
[0:50] Americans back their president.
[0:52] President Bush ordered the new air
[0:54] attacks to retaliate for the earlier
[0:56] Iraqi Scud missile attacks on Israel.
[0:58] This was the scene and the sounds of
[1:01] Israel as a Scud missile hit. Perhaps
[1:02] you saw it striking in the distance on
[1:04] that videotape. Uh some 30 persons were
[1:07] taken to hospitals, but only seven of
[1:09] them are officially listed uh as
[1:11] wounded. No deaths uh as as many as nine
[1:14] of the studs hit. Nine missiles hitting
[1:17] home in Tel Aviv, Hifa, and elsewhere,
[1:19] causing damage, but only the seven minor
[1:22] injuries. Of critical importance, the
[1:24] Scuds apparently were not carrying any
[1:26] chemical warheads, but instead
[1:28] conventional warheads. Israel's
[1:30] ambassador to the United States in
[1:32] Washington said tonight that Israel took
[1:34] a risk by supporting the United States.
[1:37] Israel took a very tough decision
[1:44] knowingly
[1:47] to risk a first strike on it.
[1:51] We knew that we might be hit.
[1:55] I myself was often asked on TV, do we
[2:00] take these threats seriously? I did say
