[0:00] Stop. But first, detectives search for

[0:03] clues while friends remember the victims

[0:05] of a triple murder.

[0:07] >> I just couldn't stand not knowing or not

[0:10] even visiting.

[0:11] >> Why authorities hope a website can help

[0:13] crack the case. First on Fox.

[0:17] >> Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm

[0:18] Hillilary Hutcherson

[0:19] >> and I'm Kevin Kawari. First on Fox

[0:21] tonight, new information in the hunt for

[0:22] a killer who murdered a mother and her

[0:24] two kids. Deputies say the crime

[0:26] happened sometime Thursday night right

[0:27] off Bethany Boulevard and Telshshire

[0:29] Terrace near Beaverton as friends of

[0:31] Jimmy and Steven Deng mourn their loss

[0:33] online. Fox 12 has learned that

[0:35] detectives are also searching those same

[0:38] web pages for clues. KPTV's David Curtis

[0:41] is live at the scene tonight with new

[0:42] information. David, that's right. The

[0:44] Washington County Sheriff's Department

[0:45] has now assigned a detective to go

[0:46] through the victim's MySpace page to

[0:48] look for clues. Meanwhile, the friends

[0:50] they'll find on that page spent the day

[0:52] leaving flowers and notes here at the

[0:54] scene. Still in shock at the loss.

[0:59] Tonight, the weather fits the mood of

[1:01] two of Steven Deng's friends.

[1:03] >> I don't believe it. I'm still in denial,

[1:06] but I know it's true, and I guess you

[1:09] can't stop that.

[1:10] >> All day, friends have left flowers and

[1:12] letters of loss for Steven and his

[1:14] brother Jimmy. Detectives say someone

[1:16] shot the 16 and 12year-old and their

[1:19] mother Melody sometime Thursday night.

[1:23] Tonight, the Washington County Sheriff's

[1:24] Department continues the gruesome task

[1:26] of going through the house. They haven't

[1:29] released much more information, no known

[1:31] motive, and they still don't know who

[1:33] the killer is. They do think it's

[1:35] someone the family knew. And on Jimmy's

[1:37] MySpace page, at least one person

[1:39] connects a family member to the crime.

[1:41] If someone wants to like hurt him, I

[1:44] think that's completely wrong and he

[1:46] doesn't deserve it, nor does his family.

[1:48] >> That connection is one of the reasons

[1:49] the sheriff's department has now

[1:51] assigned a detective to go through this

[1:53] sort of digital diary to look for clues.

[1:57] The page also makes several references

[1:59] to the Crips gang, though detectives

[2:01] don't think the crime is gang related.

[2:03] Other loose ends, deputies say they

[2:05] still haven't tracked down the boy's

[2:07] biological father, but they do make it

[2:09] clear the mother's live-in boyfriend is

[2:11] not a suspect. Cops say he found the

[2:13] three bodies when he got home from a

[2:15] night shift. With so few clues, deputies

[2:18] say they have a long investigation

[2:19] ahead, and they're hoping the many

[2:21] friends now mourning the losses here can

[2:23] help clue them in on who or why this

[2:26] crime happened.

[2:28] Tonight, the Washington County Sheriff's

[2:30] Department would like to talk to anyone

[2:31] who knows the dangs. They say even the

[2:33] smallest piece of information may help

[2:35] them crack this case. Live near

[2:37] Beaverton, David Freigher, the 10:00

[2:38] news.

[2:42] >> Fox 12's most wanted tonight is a man

[2:44] who robbed a bank inside a Woodburn

[2:46] grocery store during the evening rush.

[2:48] It happened at the OSU Federal Credit

[2:50] Union inside Safeway on North Pacific

[2:52] Highway. Investigators say the robber

[2:55] threatened the teller and demanded

[2:56] money. He then took off with the cash

[2:58] and was last seen headed east away from

[3:00] the store. The suspect is described as

[3:02] white, around 50 years old with grayish

[3:04] hair. He's also believed to be about 5'

[3:06] n and 160 lbs. If you have any

[3:09] information, call Woodburn police.

[3:11] >> A Portland man is facing arson charges

[3:13] tonight after police say he started a

[3:14] fire at an apartment complex in Gresham.

[3:17] Police arrested James Sample just before

[3:18] 1:00 this morning. The fire broke out a

[3:21] few hours earlier on Southeast 162nd. No

[3:24] one was hurt. After crews knocked down

[3:25] those flames, investigators say they

[3:27] found evidence that linked Sample to the

[3:29] arson. sample is being held on $55,000

[3:32] bail. Rumage sale shoppers at the Expo

[3:35] Center today got a bit of a scare after

[3:36] authorities thought there might have

[3:38] been a gas leak nearby. The building

[3:40] wasn't evacuated, but several emergency

[3:42] crews were called out to the scene after

[3:44] people reported smelling natural gas.

[3:47] After an investigation, authorities say

[3:48] a nearby company called Harbor Oil was

[3:50] burning off old oil and then

[3:52] recirculating it. That put off the

[3:54] natural gas smell. There was also some

[3:56] water bubbling out of Marine Drive,

[3:58] which some people initially thought

[3:59] could be natural gas.

[4:01] >> Family and friends of a missing

[4:02] Vancouver woman passed out thousands of

[4:04] flyers today. They met this afternoon at

[4:07] the Elmer's in Vancouver where Nova

[4:09] Diaquisto was supposed to meet a man for

[4:11] coffee. She met that man through an

[4:13] online dating site, we're told. That was

[4:15] on Tuesday morning, the last time anyone

[4:17] saw Nova. Now, the Vancouver Major

[4:19] Crimes Unit is investigating her

[4:21] disappearance, and her family can't help

[4:23] but think the worst.

[4:25] >> Yeah. You go close your eyes and and you

[4:27] see bad things. You know, today's

[4:29] opening day of hunting season. You know,

[4:33] did somebody take her to the woods and a

[4:34] hunter's going to find her body or her

[4:36] car? The missing woman did call work on

[4:39] Tuesday to say her 1991 Dodge Dynasty

[4:42] had broken down in Portland. No one has

[4:44] seen or heard from her since. If you

[4:46] have any information, you're asked to

[4:48] call the Vancouver Police Department. A

[4:50] seven-year-old Washington girl missing

[4:52] for six months is back with her father

[4:54] tonight. Britney Art and her dad were

[4:56] reunited in Ohio this week. Police say

[4:59] the girl's mother interfered with

[5:00] custody arrangements and moved the child

[5:02] to the Cincinnati area. Authorities say

[5:04] Regina and Carrie Teal used a fake name

[5:07] to enroll the girl in school. Her

[5:09] teacher says several things tipped her

[5:11] off.

[5:12] The big key thing was the fact that um

[5:15] her mother was dying her hair. That is

[5:18] not normal for a first grader.

[5:20] >> Detectives say when they went to the

[5:22] Teal's home, they found packed suitcases

[5:24] and believe the family was ready to take

[5:25] off at a moment's notice.

[5:27] >> He was free for years on a technicality,

[5:29] but a Salem man is now looking at

[5:31] spending the rest of his life behind

[5:33] bars. This week, Terry Dean Davis was

[5:35] convicted of killing his daughter,

[5:36] Cherish Ecklund. The 15-month-old died

[5:38] in 2002, but the first trial was

[5:40] cancelled because of a problem with the

[5:42] jury. Davis was brought back before a

[5:44] judge last month and will have to spend

[5:46] at least 25 years in prison before even

[5:48] being eligible for parole. Court

[5:51] documents may be shedding new light in

[5:52] the death of a Gresham man. Police

[5:54] arrested Casey French on Thursday for

[5:56] murdering his brother, Austin French.

[5:58] According to court documents, Casey told

[5:59] police he shot his brother four times in

[6:02] the head because he planned to steal

[6:04] money and drugs from him. 17-year-old

[6:06] Casey was at a juvenile detention

[6:07] center, but he was charged as an adult.

[6:10] Casey had been living with his brother

[6:11] and his brother's fiance for about a

[6:13] year.

[6:16] >> Well, the rain is sure coming down in

[6:18] our area, and there's plenty more on the

[6:20] way. Drivers had a tough time seeing the

[6:22] road out there while heading down

[6:23] Interstate 5 tonight thanks to those

[6:25] downpours. The weather also forced one

[6:27] car to pull off the road. Also, people

[6:30] walking through Pioneer Courthouse

[6:31] Square in downtown Portland had to have

[6:33] an umbrella to avoid the soaking. Fox 12

[6:36] meteorologist Drew Jackson joins us now

[6:37] to tell us where the rain is coming down

[6:39] right now. Right this second, right,

[6:40] Drew?

[6:41] >> Yeah, Hillary, I should say. On our live

[6:43] radar, you can see that it is beginning

[6:45] to wind down in the Portland metro area.

[6:47] Also along the I-5 corridor, but still

[6:48] coming down quite heavily to the east up

[6:51] into the foothills of the Cascades. You

[6:52] can see the motion over the last hour.

[6:54] Zoom in close here to the Mount Hood

[6:55] area from zigzag along Highway 26

[6:58] through government camp. Still raining

[6:59] hard. Sandy though you're starting to

[7:01] get out of it. Portland area, a patch

[7:03] right here along Highway 26 and through

[7:05] say the Lake Oiggo area along Interstate

[7:07] 5 as well. Sliding a little farther

[7:09] south. Not much going on in Salem at the

[7:11] moment. Rainfall totals very impressive.

[7:13] Close to an inch in central sections of

[7:14] the Lamut Valley. Newport about an inch

[7:17] and a half. Sliding a little farther to

[7:18] the north. You can see McMinnville 1.1

[7:20] in. And in the immediate metro area,

[7:23] anywhere from about 610 at Vancouver,

[7:24] this is 24 hours ending at 9:00 this

[7:26] evening to about 1.26 in at Cami. Look

[7:29] at Mount St. Helens. 5.1 in of rain

[7:32] there in the last 24 hours. So, Justice

[7:35] Soaker, we're not done yet. More rain on

[7:37] the way. More heavy rain on the way.

[7:39] Details about that later on.

[7:40] >> All right, Drew. And stay tuned to Fox

[7:42] 12 Oregon for continuing coverage of our

[7:43] weather. We will have your full forecast

[7:45] later on in this show. And of course,

[7:47] we'll have the latest update tomorrow on

[7:48] Good Day Oregon Sunday. You can always

[7:50] get your forecast at kpv.com.

[7:55] >> Only on 12, a Hillsboro woman says she's

[7:57] stuck with $100 in fake cash and her own

[8:00] bank gave it to her. KPTV Stephanie

[8:02] Kovich has the story from our newsroom

[8:04] tonight.

[8:05] >> Kelly Woods says the fake money was not

[8:07] quite as green as real money, but she

[8:10] says the difference was so subtle she

[8:12] never would have noticed. It wasn't

[8:13] until she went to a gas station and the

[8:16] attendant used a counterfeit detector

[8:18] pen on the $100 bill she paid with that

[8:20] she realized she'd been carrying fake

[8:22] cash. The face when you hold it up into

[8:25] the light, it's crooked compared to

[8:27] another $100 bill.

[8:28] >> Kelly Woods says she picked up this

[8:30] bogus Benjamin when she cashed her

[8:32] paycheck at the Hillsboro Bank of

[8:34] America branch on Cornell. She says she

[8:37] had no idea what had happened until

[8:39] after she had had her car filled up at a

[8:42] nearby gas station.

[8:43] >> It was very embarrassing because there

[8:45] was a long line. They're holding the

[8:46] $100 bill up into the light and tell me

[8:49] I had counterfeit money and asked me if

[8:51] I had real money to pay for it.

[8:53] >> Wood says when she went back to the BFA

[8:55] to report what happened, employees there

[8:57] told her she couldn't get a new hundred.

[9:00] The fake one first has to be sent to the

[9:02] FBI for further examination. If it's

[9:05] fake, I'm out the $100. If it's real, if

[9:07] the chemicals are bad, then I'll get my

[9:09] money back.

[9:10] >> A Bank of America spokesperson says,

[9:12] quote, "Once a customer leaves the bank

[9:14] premises with cash in hand, it becomes

[9:17] their responsibility and the bank has no

[9:19] further obligation, regardless of the

[9:22] circumstances.

[9:23] >> If you went to a store or somewhere

[9:25] else, then um it can happen. But going

[9:28] to a bank, you shouldn't have to test

[9:30] your money." Wood says from now on

[9:32] she'll double check what she gets when

[9:34] she cashes her check.

[9:36] >> I never thought you had to worry about

[9:38] that with a bank, but I would definitely

[9:39] check my money now and I'll never get

[9:41] hundreds again or 50s. I'll probably get

[9:43] all smaller bills.

[9:45] >> A representative from the Bank of

[9:47] America corporate office in Los Angeles

[9:49] tells us the bank is unable to offer a

[9:52] replacement or compensation in a

[9:54] situation like this one. Reporting from

[9:56] the newsroom tonight, Stephanie Kovich,

[9:58] the 10:00 news. Some parents in Sherwood

[10:01] say they're concerned about sending

[10:03] their kids off to school on Monday after

[10:05] someone reportedly wrote a threatening

[10:07] message on the wall of a boy's bathroom.

[10:09] A student found the message at Sherwood

[10:11] Middle School on Thursday. Some parents

[10:13] were told about the threat through

[10:14] email. The message reportedly said,

[10:16] "Everyone will die on Monday." However,

[10:18] Sherwood police say they're not

[10:20] concerned about any violence and they

[10:22] don't plan on stepping up any security.

[10:24] Well, school spirit may have gotten a

[10:26] little out of hand in Reineer after

[10:27] authorities say some students prepped

[10:28] for the big game by vandalizing their

[10:30] rivals turf. Early Friday morning,

[10:32] vandals spray painted the front of

[10:34] Klatanai High School and their football

[10:36] stadium. Authorities say the property

[10:37] was covered with antilaskai and pro-

[10:39] Reineer messages. Both schools football

[10:42] teams were undefeated as of last night

[10:43] and vying for the number one position to

[10:45] the state playoffs. Reer's principal

[10:47] says he knows who the vandals are and

[10:49] has been talking with the students about

[10:51] how they will make up for their actions.

[10:54] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.

[10:57] >> A major military magazine is asking for

[10:59] a big change in the war on terror. Why

[11:02] it wants Donald Rumsfeld out of the

[11:04] Pentagon.

[11:05] >> Alert stolen vehicle contact received.

[11:09] >> Could this black box save your car? How

[11:11] local police are going high-tech to

[11:13] catch thieves? Will college age voters

[11:16] sway your vote 2006? Why a record number

[11:18] of young people heading to the polls

[11:20] could change the face of Congress?

[11:22] >> And some grunting at the gym has one man

[11:25] looking for another place to lift. How

[11:27] his noisy workout got him kicked out of

[11:29] the weight room. That's coming up in the

[11:30] Fox 12 final cut.

[11:32] >> You're watching the 10:00 news first

[11:35] live local.

[11:39] Stormy weather in Fox 12's forecast.

[11:41] what it means for rain on the valley

[11:42] floor and snow in the mountains. For

[11:44] first live local weather, watch Good Day

[11:47] Oregon Sunday tomorrow morning at 6. So,

[11:50] you're ready to let fly with your vote.

[11:52] Measures 41 and 48 may sound appealing,

[11:55] but guess what? Instead of limiting the

[11:58] influence of lobbyists and special

[12:00] interests, you end up hitting our

[12:02] schools. You'll hit seniors and you'll

[12:04] hit public safety.

[12:07] Consequences? You bet. These are

[12:09] complicated measures and just like a

[12:12] boomerang, they'll come back to hit you

[12:14] right where you live. Vote no on 41 and

[12:18] 48.

[12:20] Wake up to an entire year of savings

[12:22] with Comcast. For just $33 a month, get

[12:25] America's number one highspeed internet

[12:27] with McAfee security, enhanced cable TV

[12:30] with on demand, or Comcast digital voice

[12:32] with unlimited nationwide long distance

[12:34] and 12 popular calling features. That's

[12:36] right, only $33 each per month for 12

[12:39] months. Subscribe to one, two, or all

[12:42] three. It's your choice. Get ready to

[12:44] save. Call 1800 Comcast by Tuesday for

[12:47] one of our best offers ever.

[12:49] >> Ravies is on the rise in Oregon. We'll

[12:51] tell you what this means for you and

[12:53] your pets if you want to avoid it on the

[12:55] 10:00 news. First, live local.

[12:59] >> The moat will be stocked with rainbow

[13:02] trout.

[13:04] On summer evenings, the ceiling of the

[13:07] bowling alley will open, revealing the

[13:10] southern sky.

[13:12] Now over here, we will have a petting

[13:14] zoo.

[13:17] Plumbing will run down this wall and

[13:19] connect to the polo field and to the

[13:21] vineyard.

[13:26] Lottery games are based on chance and

[13:27] should be played for entertainment only,

[13:28] not investment purposes.

[13:30] Oregon's waited a long time for results

[13:32] from Ted Kulingosski, but Ted's time is

[13:36] up. Newspapers call Kolingoski a no-show

[13:38] governor who has not stepped up to lead.

[13:41] Ron Saxton will change Oregon with

[13:43] education reform, more money into

[13:45] classrooms, a focus on results. He'll

[13:48] hold the line on taxes, cut waste,

[13:50] control spending with leadership, not

[13:52] partisanship. Koulingowski won't make

[13:54] the changes Oregon needs, but you can.

[13:57] Ron Saxton for governor.

[13:59] >> Peter Griffin here to tell you about the

[14:01] return of Fox Sunday with a little help

[14:03] from our highly paid movie trailer

[14:05] announcing.

[14:05] >> Fox Sunday's all new in November with

[14:07] The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror.

[14:09] >> Then, will American Dad be tricked into

[14:12] switching parties?

[14:12] >> I'd like you to meet my partner.

[14:14] >> Partner? What are you guys? Synchronized

[14:15] swimmers.

[14:16] >> Sunday at 7 on Fox 12 Oregon.

[14:23] In the fight for Iraq tonight, a

[14:25] decision in the trial of Saddam Hussein

[14:27] is expected soon and security forces in

[14:29] Baghdad are on high alert. Check points

[14:32] have been set up throughout the capital

[14:33] and the country has set a curfew. Saddam

[14:36] faces either the death penalty or life

[14:38] in jail prison. That is the biggest fear

[14:40] for many is that Sunni Muslim extremists

[14:42] Saddam's fiercest supporters will step

[14:44] up their bloody attacks.

[14:47] The doors of the hell will be open in

[14:49] Iraq and the neighbors of the Arab

[14:53] neighbors of Iraq.

[14:54] >> If Saddam is sentenced to death, he will

[14:56] automatically be granted an appeal, so

[14:58] it could be months before his fate is

[15:00] known. Meanwhile, in other parts of

[15:02] Iraq, violence continued. A barrage of

[15:04] mortar shells struck a power station in

[15:06] Bazra. The mortars also hit a nearby

[15:08] home, hurting four Russian engineers.

[15:10] And in central Baghdad, a roadside bomb

[15:13] exploded near a US convoy. No one was

[15:15] killed.

[15:18] >> In the war on terror tonight, a military

[15:20] newspaper says defense secretary Donald

[15:22] Rumsfeld should be fired. The editorial

[15:24] says Rumsfeld has lost credibility with

[15:26] troops and that his strategy has failed.

[15:28] It will appear Monday in four weekly

[15:30] newspapers that serve the US military.

[15:32] The Pentagon downplays the criticism,

[15:34] calling it quote old news. They say

[15:36] commanders in the field remain committed

[15:37] to their mission. A spokesman says

[15:39] President Bush is shrugging off the

[15:41] criticism. The newspapers are sold on

[15:43] military bases and delivered to

[15:45] subscribers worldwide.

[15:49] >> Now to your vote 2006 tonight, where

[15:52] many of the state's Democrats showed up

[15:53] in Northeast Portland to rally one last

[15:56] time before election day. Governor Ted

[15:58] Kulingowski gave state Senate candidate

[16:00] Paul Evans a big sendoff tonight before

[16:02] he's deployed to Afghanistan.

[16:04] Kulingosski hosted the event at his

[16:06] campaign headquarters on Northeast 7th

[16:08] Street. Other Democrats including

[16:09] Senator Ron Weiden and US

[16:11] Representatives David Woo and Darlene

[16:13] Hulie were among those saluting the

[16:15] departure. Kolangoski will take a break

[16:17] from the campaign trail tomorrow. He'll

[16:19] be speaking at a memorial service for a

[16:21] fallen soldier in the Dallas. Republican

[16:24] candidates say thanks but no thanks to

[16:26] help from the White House. A state poll

[16:28] shows Oregon voters are part of a

[16:30] national anti-Republican trend. So

[16:33] candidates are distancing themselves

[16:34] from President Bush and avoiding the

[16:36] Republican party. They hope to swing

[16:38] voters that way. Republican candidate

[16:40] for governor Ron Saxton promises to show

[16:42] independence from what he calls the mess

[16:45] in Washington. This independence also

[16:47] means he says saying no to visits from

[16:49] anyone from the White House, including

[16:51] the president.

[16:53] An Oregon Senate candidate is leaving

[16:55] for Afghanistan just days before

[16:56] election day. Again, as we mentioned,

[16:58] Democrat Paul Evans is in the National

[17:00] Guard and again, he will ship out

[17:02] tomorrow for two months. Now tonight,

[17:04] although he made a final stop on that

[17:06] campaign trail that we showed you right

[17:07] there for Governor Kolenoski, he is

[17:09] ready to go.

[17:11] >> Afghanistan and it's an opportunity for

[17:12] me to say thank you to everybody that's

[17:14] here. And it's it's one last time to try

[17:17] to get people motivated campaign and to

[17:20] come together as a family and say we can

[17:21] do it.

[17:22] >> Now, his opponent, Jackie Winter, says

[17:24] she's confident she'll keep her Senate

[17:26] seat, but she says she also wishes her

[17:28] opponent a safe journey home. Evans will

[17:30] be back from Afghanistan before the

[17:32] legislative session opens in January.

[17:34] >> They're breaking off from years of voter

[17:36] apathy and say they're ready for a

[17:38] change in the political climate. A new

[17:40] survey says a record number of young

[17:42] voters plan to cast ballots in this

[17:44] year's election. And if the 18 to 24

[17:46] year olds live up to that promise, they

[17:48] could sway the results in close races.

[17:50] Among the survey's findings, 60% of

[17:52] young people believe the country is on

[17:54] the wrong track. Only 18% say it's

[17:56] headed in the right direction. Also, 41%

[17:59] want Democrats to control Congress

[18:01] versus 25% who favor Republicans. The

[18:03] survey of more than 200 young people

[18:05] found that 32% plan to vote next week.

[18:08] The previous record turnout for a

[18:09] midterm election was set in 1982 when

[18:12] 26% participated. And with just a few

[18:15] days until election day, stay tuned to

[18:16] Fox 12 for all the latest on your vote

[18:18] 2006. We'll have an update tomorrow

[18:20] morning on Good Day Oregon and again

[18:21] tomorrow night on the 10:00 news. All

[18:23] the election information you can find

[18:25] available on our website, kptv.com.

[18:30] >> In news from around the Northwest

[18:32] tonight, a man from Clamoth Falls is

[18:34] facing attempted murder charges for

[18:36] allegedly stabbing another man with a

[18:38] sword on Halloween. Eddie Hayes is in

[18:40] the Clamoth County Jail tonight.

[18:42] Authorities say Hayes came up behind the

[18:44] victim, John Persinger, and slashed his

[18:47] thigh with the sword. Hay says

[18:49] apparently he got the sword out of a box

[18:51] that was used as a decoration inside the

[18:53] house. Sheriff's deputies say Persinger

[18:55] lost a lot of blood, but he is expected

[18:57] to recover. At this point, investigators

[18:59] don't know why Hayes allegedly attacked

[19:02] Persinger.

[19:03] Seattle Center's Montreal will likely be

[19:06] back on track soon, but it'll only carry

[19:08] a limited number of passengers at a

[19:10] time. The 44 year old line has been idle

[19:12] since August after two separate mishaps.

[19:15] No one was hurt in those. The train just

[19:17] stalled out. Before that though, it'd

[19:19] been shut down for 9 months for

[19:21] collision repair. Now, the mayor says

[19:23] the Montreal will be up and running

[19:25] before Christmas.

[19:27] >> The rise in the number of cases of

[19:28] rabies here in Oregon have both animal

[19:30] and human health officials worried

[19:32] tonight. So, today, animal shelters in

[19:34] the tri county area offered lowcost

[19:36] rabies shots for pets. KTV's Marilyn

[19:38] Deutsch reports tonight from the Fox 12

[19:40] newsroom.

[19:41] In Oregon, the number of bats testing

[19:44] positive for rabies has more than

[19:46] doubled in the last year. Protecting

[19:49] your family from rabies means first

[19:51] protecting your household pets. Emma

[19:52] Trout doing just that today. Bringing in

[19:55] a quartet of dogs and cats for rabies

[19:58] vaccines.

[20:01] >> Typically, rabies is spread from bats to

[20:03] cats or dogs. The chain continues onto

[20:06] humans when someone is bit or scratched

[20:09] or even just comes into contact with the

[20:11] saliva of a rabid animal.

[20:13] >> Like my grandkids and stuff when they're

[20:15] over because every once in a while my

[20:17] cats like to take and scratch my

[20:19] grandkids and it keeps them safe.

[20:21] >> Oregon hasn't had a human rabies case in

[20:24] 15 years and we don't want to. The

[20:26] infectious viral disease is deadly.

[20:28] Another problem vets say more and more

[20:31] people mistakenly think it is safe to

[20:34] touch bats with their bare hands.

[20:36] >> That's one of the things that we remind

[20:38] people not to do is when they see a bat

[20:41] and it looks like it's sick, leave it

[20:43] alone. Let nature take care of it.

[20:45] >> Nationally, twice as many cats as dogs

[20:47] get rabies. In large part because dogs

[20:50] are required to get the vaccines while

[20:52] cats usually are not.

[20:54] >> With my cats, they like to go outdoors

[20:55] at times, too. and I've had them for too

[20:58] many years. They're my babies. I've got

[21:00] to protect them.

[21:00] >> In Oregon, Multma County is the only

[21:03] county that requires that both dogs and

[21:06] cats be vaccinated for rabies. The fine

[21:09] if you fail to get those rabies shots

[21:11] for your pets can be a hundred bucks. In

[21:15] the Fox 12 newsroom, Marilyn Deutsch,

[21:16] the 10:00 news.

[21:18] >> It's a multi-million dollar order that

[21:20] is supposed to protect millions of

[21:22] Americans.

[21:22] >> But there are some major problems

[21:24] tonight with the anthrax vaccine. We'll

[21:26] tell you why government officials are so

[21:28] worried in our health watch.

[21:29] >> Also, it's not just an extracurricular

[21:31] activity. Now, your child's after school

[21:33] sport could cost you extra big bucks.

[21:35] We'll explain.

[21:36] >> Well, the rain has stopped for the

[21:38] moment anyway. It's Portland airport. 58

[21:40] still very, very mild outside. Not much

[21:42] wind after being very blustery earlier

[21:44] today. Here's a look outside right now.

[21:46] Yes, it's mild. There's still some rain

[21:48] scattered around. The rain is only going

[21:50] to increase as we head through the next

[21:51] couple days. And we'll see if the snow

[21:53] level is going to drop in the Cascades,

[21:54] too, coming up.

[21:56] You're watching the 10:00 news. First,

[21:58] live local.

[22:02] It's the 17th annual Holiday Food and

[22:04] Gift Festival this Friday through Sunday

[22:06] at the Oregon Convention Center. Holiday

[22:08] gifts, decorations, arts and crafts,

[22:10] gourmet food tasting. It all happens

[22:12] this Friday through Sunday at the

[22:13] Convention Center. A Portland tradition.

[22:16] You'll love it.

[22:17] >> Here's what respected Oregon newspapers

[22:19] say about Measure 42 to ban the use of

[22:22] credit information in insurance. The

[22:24] McMento News Register says Measure 42 is

[22:26] a bad idea that will raise insurance

[22:28] rates for people with good credit to

[22:30] subsidize others.

[22:31] >> The Eugene Register Guard says 42 is

[22:33] poorly written and full of unintended

[22:35] consequences.

[22:36] >> The Hillsboro Argus warns that premiums

[22:38] could go up for the 60 to 70% of

[22:40] Oregonians with good credit.

[22:42] >> The Ben Bulletin says we don't want to

[22:44] pay more for insurance. No on 42.

[22:47] >> The biggest RV sale of the year is here.

[22:50] The 48th annual Portland Metro RV Show,

[22:53] November 8th through November 12th at

[22:55] the Expo Center. Save thousands with

[22:57] special incentives on new 2006 RVs. Just

[23:00] imagine where it might lead on the next

[23:02] Stargate SG1.

[23:04] >> Where is the false god ball?

[23:06] >> A vicious war criminal is hunted down on

[23:08] Earth.

[23:08] >> Allow us to assist you in apprehending

[23:10] Ball.

[23:10] >> We are past the point where our

[23:12] differences can be settled so readily,

[23:14] >> leading SG1 to diffuse two foes.

[23:16] >> So all we have to do is find ball before

[23:18] they do. You should know that I've

[23:19] placed a neca bomb somewhere in the

[23:21] United States.

[23:22] >> Or risk a reign of terror.

[23:23] >> Colonel, did you find the bomb?

[23:24] >> The bomb is the building.

[23:26] >> On the next Stargate SG1, Saturday at 6

[23:30] on Fox 12 Oregon.

[23:32] >> Still tonight, S makes a Fox 12 final

[23:34] cut. It's not illegal, but it may be

[23:35] annoying enough to get you kicked out of

[23:37] the gym. Are you a power gruntter?

[23:39] >> Students making the grade by making

[23:40] their D's into A's. The report card

[23:43] hacking scam.

[23:44] >> And the doctor is out. Why Doogie Hower

[23:46] says it's time to tell all. That's all

[23:48] coming up in the Fox 12 Final Cut.

[23:52] >> Man, this thing is smunchy.

[23:54] >> Smunchy.

[23:54] >> Soft, melty, crunchy. It's smunchy.

[23:56] >> I'm thinking graffeli. Crunchy, soft,

[23:58] melty. No,

[23:59] >> it's more of a crunchy, chewy, cheesy,

[24:01] crunchy.

[24:03] >> Nice.

[24:04] >> I know. Knuckle me.

[24:05] >> Oh, okay. I'll just

[24:07] >> Taco Bell's cheesy gordita crunch. Warm

[24:09] flatbread covered in three melted

[24:11] cheeses wrapped around a crunchy taco

[24:12] and topped with a zesty pepper jack

[24:14] sauce. It's a textural taste sensation.

[24:17] To get crunchy, chewy, and cheesy, think

[24:19] outside the bind.

[24:22] >> He brought our schools back from the

[24:24] worst funding crisis in decades. Move

[24:26] millions of dollars from administrative

[24:28] overhead into the classroom, and

[24:30] increase college scholarships 30%. Ted

[24:33] Kolenoski. Nobody fights harder to

[24:35] improve our schools. His education

[24:38] enterprise plan will mean smaller class

[24:40] sizes, better teacher training, and

[24:41] up-to-date textbooks. And it'll finally

[24:44] guarantee stable funding for schools.

[24:46] Ted Kolenoski. Other politicians get

[24:49] more attention, but no governor gets

[24:51] more done.

[24:57] In tonight's Healthw Watch, a new study

[24:58] finds many young people aren't using

[25:00] condoms, and it's not because they can't

[25:02] get them. Researchers found social and

[25:04] cultural factors are key reasons for the

[25:06] unsafe sex. They found some associated

[25:08] condom use with a lack of trust, while

[25:10] others thought it implied something

[25:12] about a person's experience sexually.

[25:14] Also, appearance or how well partners

[25:16] knew each other factored into the

[25:17] decision to use or not to use a condom.

[25:20] Some major problems to report tonight on

[25:22] plans for a new anthrax vaccine. The

[25:24] program is reportedly behind schedule.

[25:26] The government is paying

[25:27] California-based Vaxgen $877 million to

[25:31] develop 75 million doses of the vaccine.

[25:33] But Vaxen announced Friday that the

[25:35] vaccine trial is on hold and won't make

[25:37] this month's deadline. They're delaying

[25:39] the shots for the third time. The Food

[25:41] and Drug Administration is behind the

[25:42] stall because it's worried the vaccine

[25:44] would lose its potency during the

[25:46] trials.

[25:49] Well, the steady heavy rain starting to

[25:50] break up into showers. There's quite a

[25:52] bit more heavy rain coming, though.

[25:53] We'll show you that in the 7-day

[25:54] forecast after the break.

[25:56] >> Plus, police say this black box is

[25:58] giving them directions to stolen cars,

[26:00] and it could work for your car, but it

[26:02] comes at a price. We'll explain.

[26:04] >> Police say a bank robber should have

[26:06] used a better getaway car. Why they

[26:08] didn't have a hard time catching up to

[26:10] the suspect in the final cut.

[26:12] >> You're watching the 10:00 news. First,

[26:15] live local.

[26:50] Oregon's waited a long time for results

[26:52] from Ted Kulingowski, but Ted's time is

[26:55] up. Newspapers call Kulangoski a no-show

[26:58] governor who has not stepped up to lead.

[27:01] Ron Saxton will change Oregon with

[27:03] education reform, more money into

[27:05] classrooms, a focus on results. He'll

[27:07] hold the line on taxes, cut waste,

[27:10] control spending with leadership, not

[27:12] partisanship. Kulingosski won't make the

[27:14] changes Oregon needs, but you can. Ron

[27:17] Saxton for governor.

[29:04] What makes Jack Roberts the best choice

[29:06] for Oregon Supreme Court? Twice elected

[29:08] Oregon Labor Commissioner, he expanded

[29:10] family leave for more parents, made it

[29:13] easier for teenagers to find jobs, and

[29:16] stood up for property rights. As a

[29:18] judge, he'll enforce the law and

[29:20] constitution, not his personal beliefs,

[29:23] and will protect the rights of crime

[29:25] victims and their families. Jack Roberts

[29:28] for Supreme Court. Qualified,

[29:30] independent, and fair.

[29:36] Stealing cars just became a lot tougher

[29:38] in one Oregon city known for autothefts.

[29:41] And as KPTV's Pete Ferryman reports,

[29:43] technology is playing a key role.

[29:46] >> Detective Tim Holm is going hunting.

[29:48] >> Alert. Lowjack stolen vehicle. Contact

[29:51] received.

[29:52] >> And he's following a trail of beeps and

[29:54] tones.

[29:55] >> But you could hear it getting a little

[29:56] more intense.

[29:58] The tones come from a lowjack tracking

[30:00] system recently installed in a half

[30:02] dozen Salem patrol cars. It works by

[30:05] tracking a radio signal hidden inside a

[30:08] stolen car. And the technology has

[30:10] already paid off.

[30:11] >> On the 29th of September, we had an

[30:13] activation and it took us 34 minutes

[30:16] from the time that the that we got the

[30:18] first notice until we had the vehicle

[30:21] recovered and two suspects in custody.

[30:24] >> Salem could use the technological help.

[30:26] It's considered one of the car theft

[30:28] capitals of the country with about two

[30:30] cars stolen every day. But to take

[30:32] advantage of the technology, car owners

[30:34] have to pay. It costs about 700 bucks to

[30:37] install a basic transmitter in your car.

[30:40] But more bells and whistles are

[30:41] available, like the early warning

[30:43] system. If the owner is away from the

[30:45] vehicle and the car moves, uh, it will

[30:48] immediately send a signal to a, uh, one

[30:51] of five different communication devices

[30:52] that the owner has designated, telling

[30:55] the owner that the vehicle is moving.

[30:56] The target for Detective Holm in this

[30:58] demonstration, a silver Dodge Stratus.

[31:02] And now I'm on top of him.

[31:04] >> And it turns out to be easy prey.

[31:06] >> So there he is.

[31:07] >> Pete Ferryman, the 10:00 news. And the

[31:10] Lowjack Corporation is now working with

[31:12] other law enforcement agencies in our

[31:14] area in an effort to get more of those

[31:16] systems installed and of course to sell

[31:17] more of the product.

[31:18] >> Well, this might make you cringe. You

[31:20] may not be ready for it, but there are

[31:21] only 50 more shopping days left until

[31:23] Christmas. Can you believe it?

[31:25] Organizers with the Marine Toys for Tots

[31:27] Foundation hope giftgivers will take

[31:29] time to remember the children in need

[31:30] who also have holiday wish lists. The

[31:32] toy drive kicked off at locations all

[31:33] across the country yesterday. Locally,

[31:35] Toys R Us and Clackamus launched the

[31:37] Million Toy Drive. a million toy drive

[31:39] weekend to help boost donations. Some

[31:41] say the annual drive has become a

[31:43] tradition for their families.

[31:45] >> We donate every year to teach our child

[31:47] about being a good person to help other

[31:50] people that are not as well off as we

[31:52] are.

[31:52] >> The Toys R Us drive continues through

[31:54] tomorrow. Organizers say there are 13

[31:56] million children living in poverty in

[31:57] the US and the Toys for Tots program

[32:00] aims to bring as many gifts as possible

[32:01] to those children during the holiday

[32:03] season.

[32:07] And this weekend's weather and the

[32:09] weather to come is a reminder that that

[32:11] season is approaching.

[32:13] >> You know, one thing I noticed here past

[32:14] couple days, ever since the rains kicked

[32:15] in, how dark it is during the day. I had

[32:18] to turn on all the lights inside the

[32:19] house at high noon. So, it's gloomy

[32:21] outside and uh well, it t the season

[32:23] unfortunately more rain on the way.

[32:24] Here's a look outside right now. Of

[32:26] course, it's dark out now here. I was

[32:28] talking specifically about when it was

[32:29] daytime. Uh seeing how dark it has been

[32:31] with all the clouds and the rain around.

[32:33] Live look outside Will River right now.

[32:35] Not much wind. It was very blustery

[32:37] earlier today, but the wind has calmed

[32:39] down. The rain still falling in places.

[32:41] Here's a look at it on live radar. And

[32:43] most of it now banking up against the

[32:45] Cascades. A lot of the Wamtt Valley

[32:46] finally getting a break here this

[32:47] evening. Just showers here, mainly from

[32:49] I5 West. But farther to the east, yeah,

[32:52] that rain still falling heavily into the

[32:53] Cascade Foothills, Detroit area along

[32:55] Highway 22 there, getting some steady

[32:57] rain. And it's finally starting to break

[32:58] apart a bit uh in the Mount Hood area

[33:00] right now as well. All right, we'll zoom

[33:02] in a bit closer here to the Portland

[33:03] metro area. West of town to just some

[33:05] light scattered showers now along

[33:07] Highway 26 and up into the west hills.

[33:09] Also along Highway 30 here downtown

[33:11] Portland getting a light shower at the

[33:12] moment. And farther to the east, uh

[33:14] light to moderate shower lifting to the

[33:16] north here getting ready to cross the

[33:18] Columbia River and head into Clark

[33:19] County. All right, here's a look at the

[33:20] wider view satellite radar picture

[33:22] backed it up to 10:30 this morning. You

[33:24] can see the onslaught of all the rain

[33:26] and the yellow and the green on the map.

[33:28] And there's kind of a back edge to the

[33:30] steady rain here, which is going to

[33:31] continue slipping farther south. Central

[33:33] and eastern Oregon, you're getting in to

[33:35] a bit of the light rain. You won't have

[33:37] the heavy rain that folks west of the

[33:38] Cascades had, but north of this line

[33:40] here, the showers will continue tonight,

[33:42] but it won't be nearly as steady or

[33:44] heavy as what we had earlier this

[33:46] evening. 58, very mild at PDX, 58 Salem.

[33:49] That story is at 56. Redmond, 54.

[33:51] Farther east, mostly in the 40s. All

[33:53] right, we've got a line of storms here

[33:55] taking aim at the Pacific Northwest.

[33:56] Here's the one moving through tonight.

[33:58] Again, a lot of it slipping a little

[33:59] farther south temporarily, but this one

[34:02] very significant. That is going to be

[34:04] with us tomorrow night into Monday, even

[34:08] continuing into Tuesday. That one's

[34:10] going to drop a very, very heavy amount

[34:12] of rain. You can see here by 7:00

[34:14] tomorrow morning, northwest Oregon

[34:15] actually getting a bit of a break. But

[34:17] by tomorrow afternoon, the next system

[34:19] begins to move in here and showers and

[34:22] rain and heavy rain and wind is likely

[34:24] beginning tomorrow night. And the

[34:26] heaviest batch of rain looks to be

[34:28] Monday evening into Tuesday morning. How

[34:30] much rain? Well, a lot. And here's a

[34:32] look at the rain forecast as projected

[34:34] by our computer model here. And I'll run

[34:36] the clock through time all the way until

[34:38] Monday evening. Now, we'll take a look

[34:40] at what some of these colors represent

[34:42] on the legend. Coast range perhaps close

[34:45] to 6 ines of rain between now and Monday

[34:48] evening. Also up towards the Mount St.

[34:49] Helens area, perhaps more than 6 in. And

[34:52] in the Wamut Valley, could see at least

[34:54] two inches of rain. Snow level stays

[34:56] very high in the coming days, but

[34:57] finally starts to drop in the Cascades

[34:59] to bring some new snow by Wednesday.

[35:00] First live local forecast details. First

[35:02] for the coast, high temperatures close

[35:03] to 60. Very windy tomorrow night. A high

[35:06] wind watch already up for that. And it

[35:07] will stay windy through Monday there as

[35:09] well. Want valley. Lots of rain

[35:11] beginning in the afternoon. Tomorrow,

[35:12] somewhat drier in the morning though.

[35:14] Temperatures in the low 60s. Still very

[35:15] mild tomorrow afternoon. Some scattered

[35:17] showers likely. Central and Eastern

[35:19] Oregon. Breezy and mild. Highs in the

[35:20] 50s to near 60 everywhere. Increasing

[35:23] afternoon rain. Cascade snow level

[35:24] jumping way up there to 9,000 ft.

[35:26] Portland metro area forecast here. A few

[35:29] morning showers. That's the story for

[35:31] the nighttime hours tonight as well. 60°

[35:33] tomorrow's high. Rain increases again

[35:35] tomorrow afternoon. The wind starts to

[35:37] pick up tomorrow evening again as well.

[35:38] West of town overnight lows only 50s

[35:40] tonight. Low 60s for highs tomorrow. The

[35:42] wind picking up tomorrow afternoon there

[35:44] as well. Gorge wind picks up tomorrow

[35:45] afternoon. East side of town. Rain

[35:47] arrives in the afternoon. Also, 7-day

[35:49] forecast here shows a stormy day Monday

[35:51] and quite warm with the rain. 65 with

[35:54] the inches of rain falling and then down

[35:56] to 58 Tuesday. Some mountain snow

[35:58] showers continue Wednesday, Thursday,

[36:00] maybe a break later Thursday into Friday

[36:01] and some cooler conditions as well. More

[36:03] rain though as we look to head into next

[36:05] weekend. Stephanie's in tomorrow morning

[36:07] with forecast beginning at 6.

[36:10] The final cut gets results faster as

[36:12] police say some high school students

[36:14] find a shortcut to straight A's. This

[36:16] teen thought he'd found a shortcut to

[36:18] his first million before his customers

[36:20] caught on to the scam. And playing

[36:22] Doogie Hower gave him a shortcut to TV

[36:25] stardom. Now the actor behind the teen

[36:27] doctor is revealing a secret. We're not

[36:29] taking any shortcuts here on the 10:00

[36:31] news. First live local.

[36:34] One of these letters is dangerous

[36:36] because it's the governmentmandated

[36:38] notice of a teen's pregnancy being

[36:39] delivered to an abusive parent. Measure

[36:42] 43 sets up an automatic required

[36:45] notification to parents with no

[36:46] exceptions for rape or even incest. It

[36:49] puts at risk teens in greater danger. No

[36:53] counseling, no protection, just an

[36:55] impersonal and dangerous letter sent in

[36:57] the mail. Measure 43. It's not so simple

[37:01] and it's definitely not safe.

[39:57] You stand by the final cut in 3 2 1. Cue

[40:00] him.

[40:00] >> The final cut begins tonight with news

[40:02] across America where deputies in Florida

[40:04] say they've arrested a bank robber who

[40:07] used a cab as his getaway car.

[40:09] Detectives say the suspect took the taxi

[40:11] to the Sunrust Bank in Fort Lauderdale

[40:13] and asked the driver to wait for him

[40:15] while he went inside. He then reportedly

[40:17] robbed the place and took off in the

[40:18] cab. The driver says he got suspicious

[40:21] after the suspect started acting

[40:22] nervously and asked him to speed up.

[40:24] Police arrested the suspect after they

[40:26] tracked down that calf. Embattled

[40:28] evangelical leader Ted Haggard was

[40:30] forced out of his church today amid

[40:32] allegations that he had sex with a male

[40:34] prostitute. Officials at the New Life

[40:36] Church in Colorado say they conducted an

[40:39] investigation and found that the

[40:40] reverend had engaged in sexually immoral

[40:43] conduct. They say a man who describes

[40:45] himself as an escort says Haggard paid

[40:47] him for sex during the last three years.

[40:49] Heaggard admits he paid the man for a

[40:51] massage and for meth, but he denies

[40:53] having sex with him. Haggard resigned as

[40:55] president of the influential National

[40:57] Association of Evangelicals two days

[40:59] ago. A radio talk show host in Boston

[41:02] has been fired for referring to a

[41:04] Massachusetts gubanatorial candidate in

[41:06] a derogatory way. John Dero used a slur

[41:09] to refer to Green Party candidate Grace

[41:11] Ross' sexuality and her weight. Grace,

[41:14] who is gay, called the comment

[41:16] offensive. She hopes it might help set a

[41:18] new standard for political debate. The

[41:20] Boston Globe reports that Pro ended up

[41:22] calling Ross to apologize. Fire

[41:24] investigators are trying to figure out

[41:26] how an indoor flea market caught on fire

[41:28] in Kansas. Fire crews responded to the

[41:30] three alarm blaze last night. Flames

[41:32] were seen shooting from the building and

[41:34] authorities were forced to evacuate the

[41:35] area around the fire. The building's

[41:37] owner says he evicted the tenant more

[41:39] than a month ago. He says they didn't

[41:41] leave and so he shut off the building's

[41:43] electricity. No one was hurt. Some

[41:45] students in Florida may have hacked into

[41:47] their school's computer system and

[41:49] changed their grades. A staff member

[41:51] noticed discrepancies in the grades last

[41:53] week and called police. Now the

[41:54] sheriff's office is working with the

[41:56] district to find out what happened. Many

[41:58] students are angry that classmates may

[42:00] have cheated.

[42:01] >> I'll be pretty mad.

[42:03] >> Yeah, because I pretty much just put

[42:05] effort into my work and they didn't.

[42:07] >> So, they'll probably get more credit in

[42:09] class than I would.

[42:10] >> The district's 262,000 students will get

[42:12] their first report cards Monday. And

[42:14] officials say some of those grades may

[42:16] be inaccurate. Hazmat crews had a big

[42:19] mess on their hands in Arizona today

[42:21] after a Federal Express truck carrying

[42:23] corrosive acid crashed on the

[42:25] interstate. Authorities say the accident

[42:27] happened when a car crossed the median

[42:28] and hit the oncoming pickup which then

[42:31] smashed into the FedEx truck. The FedEx

[42:33] truck was hauling 55gallon drums of the

[42:35] acid. All three vehicles caught on fire.

[42:37] Crews had to close down the freeway for

[42:39] hours while they cleaned the acid off

[42:41] the road. Well, police in Arizona

[42:43] arrested a man after a high-speed chase,

[42:45] and they say he had eight undocumented

[42:47] workers in the car. It all began last

[42:49] night when police tried to pull over the

[42:51] driver, who was also an illegal

[42:53] immigrant. He instead sped off, reaching

[42:55] speeds stop topping 110 mph. The driver

[42:58] eventually pulled off the road, but took

[42:59] off on foot. A police dog found him

[43:01] hiding in a nearby tree. He was taken to

[43:03] the hospital with minor injuries.

[43:04] Authorities say there were six adults

[43:06] and two children still in the car. A

[43:09] 5-year-old trick-or-treater struck gold

[43:11] while sorting through his Halloween loot

[43:13] this year. In addition to the usual

[43:14] candy bars, lollipops, and gum, the boy

[43:17] had somehow managed to snag a man's gold

[43:20] diamond wedding ring. The boy's parents

[43:22] who were sorting through the candy with

[43:23] him immediately called police who picked

[43:25] it up and put the word out that they

[43:27] were in search of the owner. Well,

[43:28] yesterday, a man who lives near the

[43:30] family claimed the ring that apparently

[43:32] fell off his finger while he was handing

[43:34] out treats.

[43:36] Doctors in Miami performed a life-saving

[43:38] surgery where they gave a woman not just

[43:41] one but six new organs. The woman had

[43:44] her first regular meal yesterday since

[43:46] the rare transplant surgery that

[43:47] replaced her digestive system. She

[43:49] became sick more than a year ago after

[43:51] suffering from what she thought was a

[43:53] severe stomach ache. That's when doctors

[43:55] found out she has short gut syndrome and

[43:57] needed surgery right away.

[44:00] >> I got a multi-isceral transplant here.

[44:03] um six brand new organs. Um stomach,

[44:07] pancreas, small intestine, large

[44:10] intestine, spleen, and liver. About 300

[44:13] of these transplants have been done

[44:15] worldwide. Half of them at the Miami

[44:17] Hospital. It's a test drive unlike any

[44:20] you've seen. Flying Ace, Snoopy,

[44:22] Pikachu, and the other Macy's

[44:24] Thanksgiving Day hot air balloons hit

[44:26] the skies around Giant Stadium in New

[44:28] Jersey. It's Macy's annual balloon fest.

[44:31] It's a huge practice run for the Macy's

[44:33] parade. Balloon Fest gives the handlers

[44:35] a chance to test drive the newest

[44:37] balloons before their Thanksgiving

[44:39] debut.

[44:43] >> In world news tonight, thousands of

[44:44] people took to the streets across Taiwan

[44:46] today demanding that their president

[44:48] step down following embezzlement

[44:50] charges. Yesterday, prosecutors indicted

[44:52] the president's wife and three

[44:53] presidential aids on embezzlement,

[44:55] forgery, and perjury charges. They also

[44:58] say they have enough evidence to indict

[44:59] the president after he leaves office.

[45:01] Under Taiwanese law, a sitting president

[45:03] is immune from such charges. The

[45:05] president has said that he will respond

[45:07] to the protesters within the next 2

[45:09] days. Iran continues its public show of

[45:12] military might. The country is in day

[45:14] three of a 10-day war game exercise. The

[45:17] war games included some 30,000 ground

[45:19] forces testing missiles and

[45:20] anti-personnel weapons. State television

[45:23] reported several types of missiles were

[45:24] tested, including one which could reach

[45:26] Israel. The United Nations Security

[45:28] Council is still debating over

[45:29] punishment for Iran's refusal to stop

[45:32] uranium enrichment.

[45:34] An Italian photographer kidnapped in

[45:36] Afghanistan is home tonight, just one

[45:38] day after his release. The Italian

[45:40] defense minister greeted Gabrielle

[45:42] Torsello at the airport in Rome. Torcell

[45:44] was kidnapped on October 12th while

[45:46] traveling by bus near Kandahar. He'll be

[45:48] questioned by anti-terrorism

[45:49] investigators in Rome before heading to

[45:51] his family's house in southern Italy.

[45:53] His kidnappers had asked for the

[45:55] withdrawal of Italy's 1,800 troops from

[45:58] Afghanistan.

[46:02] In tonight's high-tech threat, a Florida

[46:04] teenager has made nearly a million

[46:06] dollars selling fake items on eBay. Now,

[46:09] experts say you can avoid similar scams.

[46:12] They say you should compare websites and

[46:14] learn as much as you can about the

[46:15] product and about the seller. And they

[46:17] warn never pay with cash.

[46:21] >> If you can pay with your credit card,

[46:23] that's always a good way because you do

[46:25] have some protection because if you

[46:26] don't get your product and within you

[46:28] get your statement, then you can go back

[46:30] and put notify your credit card company

[46:32] and you have some recourse there.

[46:34] >> They say you especially need to be

[46:36] careful during the holiday season when

[46:38] scams are more likely. The final cut

[46:41] gets pumped up now with a weighty

[46:43] controversy over too much noise in the

[46:45] gym. KPTV's David Fredus has more from

[46:47] the Fox 12 mobile newsroom.

[46:50] >> When you lift this sandbag, it weighs

[46:51] about 20 lbs. You may not make any

[46:53] noise, but when you lift hundreds of

[46:55] pounds, you may grunt. Well, apparently

[46:58] one man grunted a little too loudly at a

[47:00] gym in upstate New York and ended up

[47:02] getting kicked out. He says he was

[47:04] lifting about 500 lb on the squat

[47:06] machine. says he may have grunted, but

[47:08] he doesn't know cuz he had headphones

[47:10] on. But his gym has a rule against

[47:12] grunting, and when the manager heard

[47:14] him, she kicked him out. They say

[47:16] grunting intimidates other people

[47:18] working out there, and they want their

[47:19] gym to be a quote judgment-free zone.

[47:22] Weightlifterss we talked to don't buy

[47:24] it.

[47:24] >> You're going to go to a gym if you're

[47:25] lifting weights, you're going to be

[47:26] grunting. Um, a lot of people wear, you

[47:30] know, bring their iPods and detract from

[47:34] that. Plus, they have music always

[47:35] playing. If anything, it I would be

[47:37] offended by somebody who wasn't clean

[47:39] and smelled.

[47:41] >> Many gyms do have rules about behavior.

[47:43] You may want to check with your own the

[47:44] next time you go to Max on your bench

[47:46] press. In the Fox 12 mobile news, I'm

[47:47] David Freighus, the 10:00 news.

[47:50] >> School districts across the country are

[47:52] telling students you'll have to pay to

[47:54] play. Shrinking budgets mean schools

[47:56] can't pay for extracurricular

[47:58] activities. And it's not just athletics.

[48:00] Students are being forced to pay for

[48:01] clubs and serviceoriented activities.

[48:04] Parents worry they won't be able to

[48:05] afford the fees and they say it's better

[48:08] than the alternative though. No one's

[48:11] happy with fees. It's but it's a better

[48:14] choice than having the clubs go away.

[48:17] Pay to play has survived court

[48:20] challenges in the past, but a New Jersey

[48:22] legislature is proposing a law to ban

[48:24] fees altogether.

[48:28] Tonight, Hollywood is buzzing as the

[48:30] former star of Doogie Hower comes out.

[48:32] Doogie Hower star Neil Patrick Harris

[48:34] tells People magazine he is gay. He says

[48:37] he wants to set the record straight

[48:38] after recent rumors about his sexuality.

[48:40] The TV star says he is quote quite proud

[48:43] and quote a very content gay man.

[48:45] 33-year-old Harris got his big break

[48:47] playing teenage genius Doogiehouser MD

[48:50] in the early 1990s. Anna Nicole remains

[48:53] hospitalized tonight recovering from a

[48:55] collapsed lung. She checked into the

[48:56] Bahamas hospital Monday for pneumonia.

[48:58] It's the same hospital where Smith's son

[49:00] died while visiting her after the birth

[49:02] of her daughter in September. A private

[49:04] examiner says Daniel died of a lethal

[49:05] combination of methadone and

[49:07] antid-depressants.

[49:08] >> Actor Wesley Snipes is no longer a

[49:11] fugitive from the law. Snipes has

[49:12] reached an agreement with the IRS on tax

[49:14] fraud charges. He will surrender to

[49:16] authorities when he returns from

[49:18] Namibia, where he's shooting a movie

[49:19] right now. But he won't go to jail.

[49:21] Instead, he agreed to a payment plan for

[49:23] the nearly $12 million in false tax

[49:26] refunds that he claimed back in the late

[49:28] 90s. They may not be able to vote, but

[49:31] hip hop mogul Russell Simmons thinks

[49:33] kids can get their parents excited about

[49:35] it. Simmons is appearing in a short

[49:37] cartoon about voting. The film

[49:39] encourages children to push their

[49:40] parents to the polls on Tuesday. He

[49:42] tells kids to remind their parents of

[49:44] all the taxes they have to pay. The

[49:46] five-minute cartoon will be shown in

[49:48] schools around the country. And that's

[49:50] Fox 12's final cut for tonight.

[49:54] >> I'm Matt Smith ahead in sports. The

[49:56] Blazers staged their home opener, but

[49:58] the national anthem was a lot easier on

[50:00] the eyes. Plus, Oregon State follows up

[50:23] >> Fox 12 Oregon. From the first ballot

[50:25] counted

[50:25] >> to the last acceptance speech,

[50:27] >> there's only one place with wall-to-wall

[50:29] coverage on election night.

[50:30] >> Coverage starts Tuesday night at 8 on

[50:32] Fox 12 Oregon. First, live local.

[50:34] >> Here's what respected Oregon newspapers

[50:36] say about Measure 42 to ban the use of

[50:39] credit information in insurance. The

[50:41] McMento News Register says Measure 42 is

[50:44] a bad idea that will raise insurance

[50:46] rates for people with good credit to

[50:47] subsidize others.

[50:48] >> The Eugene Register Guard says 42 is

[50:51] poorly written and full of unintended

[50:52] consequences.

[50:53] >> The Hillsboro Argus warns that premiums

[50:55] could go up for the 60 to 70% of

[50:58] Oregonians with good credit.

[50:59] >> The Ben Bulletin says we don't want to

[51:01] pay more for insurance. No on 42.

[51:05] >> Man, this thing is smunchy. Smunchy.

[51:08] Soft. Melty crunchy. It's smunchy. I'm

[51:10] thinking graffeli crunchy soft melty.

[51:12] >> No, it's more about crunchy, chewy,

[51:14] cheesy. How about

[51:15] >> crunchy wheezy?

[51:16] >> I love you.

[51:17] >> Awkward.

[51:19] >> I love you.

[51:21] >> Taco Bell's cheesy gordita crunch. Warm

[51:24] flatbread covered in three melted

[51:25] cheeses wrapped around a crunchy taco

[51:27] and topped with a zesty pepper jack

[51:29] sauce for a textural taste sensation.

[51:31] Think outside the bun.

[51:35] >> Big rushing attack for the Ducks. So,

[51:37] why was today's game against the Huskies

[51:38] too close for comfort? We'll take you

[51:40] there coming up on the 10:00 news.

[51:52] >> When your check engine light is on, it

[51:55] can cause concern.

[51:57] Is it a small problem or a large one?

[52:01] Put your mind at ease. Bring it to Amco.

[52:04] Whatever it is, nobody can find it or

[52:07] fix it better. Check engine light on.

[52:10] Get it checked for free at Amco. Doublea

[52:14] MCO. Late night Saturday. Nelly Pado

[52:17] goes mad.

[52:18] >> I think I had a fittado at Taco Bell.

[52:20] >> Mad TV's all new tonight at 11 on Fox 12

[52:23] Oregon.

[52:25] Fox 12 goes to extreme measures to keep

[52:27] your kids safe. Monday on the 10:00

[52:29] news.

[52:31] Oregon's waited a long time for results

[52:33] from Ted Kulingosski, but Ted's time is

[52:36] up. Newspapers call Kulenowski a no-show

[52:39] governor who has not stepped up to lead.

[52:42] Ron Saxton will change Oregon with

[52:44] education reform, more money into

[52:46] classrooms, a focus on results. He'll

[52:48] hold the line on taxes, cut waste,

[52:51] control spending with leadership, not

[52:53] partisanship. Kulangoski won't make the

[52:56] changes Oregon needs, but you can. Ron

[52:58] Saxton for governor.

[53:05] Welcome back. A capacity crowd at the

[53:07] Rose Garden tonight for the Blazers home

[53:08] opener against the Timberwolves. And

[53:10] they got things started with Storm Large

[53:11] singing the national anthem. The local

[53:13] singer recently featured on the TV show

[53:15] Rockstar. As for the game, Blazers down

[53:17] by 16 in the first half. But here in the

[53:19] fourth, Martell Webster knocking down

[53:21] back-to back threes. And Portland took

[53:23] the lead 7774.

[53:25] Webster scored 16 tonight. Moments

[53:27] later, Travis Outlaw outstanding

[53:29] tonight, goes right over Kevin Garnett.

[53:32] Outlaw led Portland with 18 points and

[53:34] 15 rebounds. With three minutes to go,

[53:36] Minnesota retakes the lead on Ricky

[53:38] Davis's three-pointer. Blazers down by

[53:41] one with 6.2 seconds on the clock. Juan

[53:44] Dixon. Bam. Game over. Blazers rally to

[53:47] beat the Timberwolves 8886.

[53:50] They keep doing this. The Rose Garden

[53:52] will be sold out every night. That's

[53:54] what we play for is for the fans. And uh

[53:57] when you have that opportunity to play

[53:58] in front of your fans, you know, give

[54:00] these fans something to come back for.

[54:02] >> Everybody was in this game. Everybody

[54:03] was ready when their name was called.

[54:05] And uh you know, fortunately when the

[54:07] ball came me and W's way when we knocked

[54:09] those shots down.

[54:10] >> Hopefully this this shows them, you

[54:11] know, with their support, you know, we

[54:12] can we can do a lot of special things.

[54:14] So if they can turn out like that every

[54:15] night and we can get that type of

[54:16] effort, it'll be a great season.

[54:18] >> Well, today the Oregon Ducks managed to

[54:19] beat the Huskies in spite of quarterback

[54:21] Dennis Dixon. Oregon had a stellar

[54:23] running game, offsetting Dixon's

[54:25] mistakes. Anytime the Ducks face the

[54:26] Huskies, it's a must-win situation.

[54:28] Patrick Chung helping Oregon's cause

[54:30] midway through the opening quarter. 59yd

[54:33] punt return for the touchdown. Ducks on

[54:35] top 7 nothing just like that. Problem is

[54:38] Dennis Dixon set up Washington with a

[54:40] pair of interceptions in the first and

[54:42] third quarters. Dixon has less than 150

[54:44] yards passing in each of the last four

[54:46] games and the two picks today resulted

[54:48] in Washington's only touchdowns. This

[54:50] third quarter, Huskies score cut

[54:52] Oregon's lead to three. Fortunately,

[54:54] Oregon had a running game. Jonathan

[54:56] Stewart leading the way, 159 yards and

[54:58] two touchdowns. As a team, the Ducks

[55:00] rushed for 316 yards and they beat

[55:03] Washington 3414. At Reer, the Beavers

[55:06] hosting Arizona State. Early on, OSU got

[55:08] a pair of rushing touchdowns from

[55:10] Evansson Bernard. The second one here.

[55:12] Beavers led 17- nothing after one

[55:14] quarter. In the second, Matt Moore rolls

[55:16] out, finds Anthony Wheat Brown in the

[55:18] end zone. By halftime, OSU had a

[55:20] commanding 31-10 lead. Big numbers for

[55:22] receiver Sammy Stradder. He had six

[55:24] catches for 116 yards. A lot of it right

[55:27] here, the 49 yard, helping set up a

[55:29] Beavers field goal. Once they got Stroer

[55:31] down, the game continued. How about OSU

[55:33] red shirt freshman Tony Carrasco.

[55:35] Closing minutes of the game, loses his

[55:37] helmet on the way to his first ever OSU

[55:40] touchdown. Beavers roll past Arizona

[55:42] State 44-10. USC rebounding from that

[55:45] OSU loss last week with a 42 nothing

[55:47] route. Cal holds off UCLA today and

[55:49] Arizona upsets Wazu 2717.

[55:53] The PSU Vikings had a date in Flagstaff

[55:55] with Northern Arizona after nearly

[55:57] blowing an 18-point lead. The Vikings

[55:59] hang on to win. PSU now 5-2 in

[56:01] conference and their playoff hopes are

[56:03] still alive. In McMinnville, Lynfield

[56:05] loses its first conference game since

[56:07] 2001. And WAMIT beats Lewis and Clark

[56:10] 6114 was the final there. We can also

[56:12] tell you tonight in high school

[56:13] football, Sky View hosting its first

[56:15] ever playoff game. And Sky View comes up

[56:17] with a big win over South Kits. Michael

[56:19] Lake getting it done for the team

[56:20] tonight. So big win as Sky View plays

[56:23] its first ever playoff game and they

[56:24] come up with the win tonight 215.

[56:27] Big stuff for Sky View this evening.

[56:29] >> All right, Matt, thanks. Before we go,

[56:30] we do have some breaking news to cover

[56:32] tonight.
