[0:00] Peter Jennings is next. In fact, he
[0:01] started. We'll see you back here at 6.
[0:04] >> Campaign is just around the corner.
[0:06] Millions of people anxious to know if
[0:08] the Soviets can somehow pull off a deal
[0:10] with the Iraqis that will make a ground
[0:12] campaign unnecessary. Mikall Gorbachoff
[0:15] laid out something to the Iraqi foreign
[0:17] minister Takaziz this morning in Moscow.
[0:19] Mr. said that since the phone lines to
[0:21] Iraq are no longer reliable, he would
[0:23] hand carry it back to Baghdad the long
[0:25] way by plane to the Iranian capital

[0:57] >> The new proposal is fully in line with
[0:59] our principal position stated
[1:01] repeatedly, which calls for an
[1:03] unconditional withdrawal in accordance
[1:05] with all UN resolutions. It's apparent
[1:08] that Gorbachov wants to get Saddam
[1:10] Hussein out of Kuwait, but allow him to
[1:13] save face. One report here says the
[1:15] Gorbachoff plan includes a promise that
[1:18] after the withdrawal, Moscow would
[1:20] guarantee Iraq's territorial integrity
[1:23] and oppose any punishment of Sodom
[1:26] Hussein.
[1:27] >> We would like unconditional uh
[1:29] withdrawal, stopping all blood bloodshed
[1:32] and taking care of all the issues which
[1:35] are cre
