[0:03] The US Army fights for control of
[0:05] sprawling Panama City, where lutters
[0:08] rule some streets and snipers kill from
[0:10] rooftops. The first American dead from
[0:12] the Panama invasion are returned to US
[0:14] soil.
[0:18] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rattle
[0:20] reporting. Good evening. President Bush
[0:22] said today in a news conference that the
[0:24] combat situation in Panama is, and I
[0:26] quote, pretty well wrapped up. However,
[0:29] fighting has not ceased. Gangs of
[0:31] lutters are on the loose. There is much
[0:33] chaos, and the exact situation is

[1:04] government made its first move today. It
[1:06] imposed a curfew. Our CBS News
[1:08] correspondent Juan Vasquez has been in
[1:11] Panama City for quite a while. He spent
[1:13] uh several harrowing hours uh being
[1:16] evacuated and being among the missing.
[1:18] But we now believe we have him up on a
[1:20] telephone communication uh from Panama
[1:22] City and we want to try it. Juan, if
[1:24] you're there, what's the situation?
[1:27] >> Dan, American forces are still coming
[1:29] under sniper fire in Panama City, and US
[1:32] officers admit many sections of the
[1:33] capital are not secure.
[1:37] The soldiers from the 82nd Airborne s
