[0:00] The president gives Iraq one final
[0:03] chance. The coalition
[0:06] will give Saddam Hussein until noon
[0:09] Saturday
[0:12] to do what he must do.
[0:14] Begin
[0:15] his immediate
[0:17] and unconditional withdrawal from
[0:19] Kuwait.
[0:21] After a day of furious diplomatic
[0:23] activity in Moscow, Washington, and
[0:26] Baghdad, the question remains, will
[0:29] Saddam comply or will the ground war
[0:32] begin?
[0:40] This is ABC News Nightline. Reporting
[0:43] from Washington with the latest on the
[0:45] Gulf War, Ted Koppel.
[0:48] At this critical stage, it has boiled
[0:50] down to a war of nerves, a struggle

[1:17] Saddam Hussein or indirectly through
[1:20] Mikhail Gorbachev.
[1:21] The Soviets plead in Iraq's behalf for a
[1:24] fig leaf,
[1:25] a spoonful of face-saving sugar to help
[1:28] Saddam Hussein swallow the bitter
[1:30] medicine of defeat.
[1:31] There is not the slightest public
[1:33] indication from the White House that any
[1:35] compromise will be forthcoming.
[1:37] Indeed as Nightline correspondent Jackie
[1:39] Judd reports, the president has set a
[1:41] deadline which is now just a little more
[1:44] than 12 hours off.
[1:47] After nearly 7 months of crisis in the
[1:49] Gulf, it came to this, an ultimatum from
[1:52] President Bush.
[1:54] The coalition
[1:55] will give Saddam Hussein
[1:58] until noon Saturday
[2:01] to do what he must do.
[2:03] Begin
