[0:03] This is the CBS Evening News

[0:06] with Dan Rather in Washington and Connie

[0:10] Chung in New York.

[0:12] >> Good evening. Here on Capitol Hill,

[0:14] Washington's new Republican power

[0:16] brokers fanned out, dug in, and got down

[0:18] to business. Today, the Senate picked up

[0:20] where the House left off. The talk was

[0:23] of consiliation. The agenda remains the

[0:26] same. A sharp shift to the right,

[0:29] including rolling back, even dismantling

[0:32] government programs established over the

[1:06] The Senate Judiciary Committee opened

[1:07] hearings on a proposed balance budget

[1:09] amendment. Two Republican senators

[1:12] introduced line item veto legislation.

[1:15] These Republicans laid out a plan for

[1:17] term limits on legislators. These

[1:19] Republicans unveiled a plan to stop

[1:22] Congress from creating programs the

[1:24] states must pay for. And these

[1:26] Republicans vowed to hold back

[1:28] government regulations. The occasional

[1:30] Democrat did appear when an unused

[1:33] microphone could be found. This group

[1:35] proposed their own version
