[0:01] Evening from Washington, where President
[0:03] Clinton tonight has expressed deep
[0:04] concern over the crash of TWA flight
[0:07] 800, saying that his the president's
[0:10] thoughts and concerns are with the
[0:12] victims and their families tonight. Now,
[0:14] officials say that it is too soon to say
[0:16] what has happened to the plane, whether
[0:18] it was a mechanical failure of some kind
[0:21] or perhaps an act of terrorism. Now,
[0:24] numerous boats are in the waters of the
[0:26] Atlantic right now. Coast Guard rescue
[0:28] boats, along with the Navy rescue
[0:31] aircraft, we are told are searching for
[0:33] possible survivors.
[0:35] Pictures from the area there tonight
[0:37] show burning wreckage, burning fuel
[0:39] across the water. There was a report of
[0:41] life rafts floating on the water, but so
[0:43] far no reports of any survivors.
[0:47] The plane went down, we understand,
[0:49] about 12 mi south of Long Island Sound
[0:52] in New York. The plane had just taken
[0:53] off from JFK Airport in New York City,
[0:56] bound for Paris.
[0:58] Now, eyewitnesses describe seeing and
[1:01] hearing two big explosions and orange
[1:04] fireball.
[1:06] And and there was a loud explosion noise
[1:09] first, then an explosion in the air, and
[1:13] bright orange, bright red, into a
[1:16] fireball that went down, hit the ocean
[1:20] with pieces flying all over, and then,
[1:24] as it hit the ocean, five more
[1:27] explosions.
[1:30] I was with my daughter, and I said to
[1:31] her, "Oh my god, there's a plane
[1:32] crashing." Well, no sooner had I said
[1:35] those words than a huge, huge,
[1:37] tremendous red ball exploded. And on
[1:39] either side of the red ball, it was like
[1:41] the sun exploding, except it was red, no
[1:43] oran
