[0:07] and collect the dead. Emergency
[0:09] officials struggle to feed and house
[0:11] more than half a million hurricane
[0:13] evacuees. And the death of Chief Justice

[0:18] on the Supreme Court.
[0:22] This is the CBS Morning News for Labor
[0:24] Day, Monday, September 5th.
[0:30] Thanks for joining us. I'm Susan
[0:31] McInness. State and federal officials
[0:34] now agree the death toll from Hurricane
[0:36] Katrina will reach the thousands. In New

[1:17] Orleans will rise well above a thousand.
[1:19] Disease is a growing concern as corpses
[1:21] have been left to rot on the sidewalk
[1:23] and in muddy water. Despite it all, some
[1:26] residents refuse to leave their homes.
[1:28] >> I think we are having some difficulties
[1:30] getting some of the folks out of their
[1:31] houses because they think they're safer
[1:33] there. This is the world that they've
[1:35] known all of their lives.
[1:36] >> Lives lost
