[0:05] from around the world and from CBS News
[0:08] in Washington. This is the CBS [music]
[0:10] Evening News with Dan Rather.
[0:13] >> Good evening. The Egyptian Parliament
[0:15] moved swiftly today to fill the
[0:16] leadership void created by the
[0:18] assassination of Anoir Sedat, nominating
[0:20] the late president's personal choice as
[0:22] successor. At the same time, the
[0:24] government tried to calm fears of a
[0:26] widespread coup attempt, saying that
[0:28] Saddat's attackers at yesterday's
[0:30] military parade were a small band of
[0:32] Muslim fanatics and were not connected
[0:34] with any government or political group.
[0:36] Walter Kankite in Cairo has our report.
[0:41] >> Cairo is calm today. Surprisingly,
[0:44] extraordinarily calm. There's no great
[0:46] display of troops in the streets. The
[0:49] transition of power here at the
[0:51] Parliament building seemed to go
[0:53] smoothly. And on the streets of Cairo
[0:56] itself, the people show none of the
[0:58] emotion that might be expected on the
[1:01] tomorrow of one of the nation's greatest
[1:02] tragedies.
[1:04] Tomorrow is a holiday here, a gay feast
[1:07] day. Shops were filled as Egyptians
[1:09] bought lamb and mutton and gifts for the
[1:12] occasion. Only in one village visited by
[1:14] CBS News, his birthplace, met Abulkum in
[1:18] the Nile Delta, did we find a distraught
[1:20] population.
[1:23] [cheering]
[1:27] At the offices of government, it was a
[1:29] busy day. For only the second time in
[1:31] the 29-year-old republic's history, a
[1:33] successor to the presidency had to be
[1:35] chosen. Sedat's ruling party last night,
[1:38] hours after the assassination, formally
[1:41] approved as its candidate, Saddat's
[1:43] handpicked political heir
