[0:13] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:16] with Dan Rather reporting tonight from
[0:19] Belgrade.
[0:21] Good evening from inside Serbia and the
[0:23] bomb damaged but defiant capital city of
[0:26] Belgrade. The war is widening. The time
[0:28] frame for it is lengthening and their
[0:31] new ominous signs. So, I've come here to
[0:33] give you a firsthand look this week at
[0:35] the other side in the battle between the
[0:37] US and its allies and the Yugoslav
[0:39] government of Slovadar Mallich. This is
[0:42] the 20th night of the air campaign
[0:44] aerial bombardment that has damaged but
[0:46] not destroyed Yugoslavia's formidable
[0:49] military. NATO says it is grinding down
[0:52] Serb forces. The Serbs disagree. in
[0:55] south of here in Kosovo. They are
[0:57] mopping up and digging in for a long
[0:59] struggle and there is no sign that
[1:02] they're anywhere near reversing course.
[1:05] Today there's fresh evidence of how
[1:07] fierce the battle has become.
[1:10] A passenger train in southeastern Serbia
[1:12] apparently was hit this afternoon by a
[1:14] NATO missile. Two cars were destroyed,
[1:17] two others damaged. The train, the Serbs
[1:20] say, was carrying civilians, ordinary
[1:23] people, including foreigners, they say.
[1:25] Serb officials say at least nine bodies
[1:27] have already been found, and they expect
[1:29] to find more. NATO says the train was
[1:33] not the intended target.
[1:36] This followed another night of NATO
[1:38] bombardment.
[1:40] Targets included a fuel depot, a
[1:42] military barracks, and a factory, which
[1:44] NATO insists is manufacturing military
[1:47] hardware. Although the Serbs say it's an
[1:49] automobile plant
