[0:07] On World News Tonight this Thursday, the
[0:10] Pentagon admits at least 5,000 US troops
[0:13] may have been exposed to nerve gas
[0:15] during the Persian Gulf War.
[0:17] President Clinton is defeated in the
[0:19] House of Representatives. The subject is
[0:21] late-term abortion.
[0:23] And how saving nickels and dimes may
[0:26] save your job. Solutions on the assembly
[0:29] line.
[0:32] From ABC, this is World News Tonight
[0:36] with Peter Jennings.
[0:37] Good evening. We begin tonight with
[0:38] accusations that once again the Pentagon
[0:40] is involved in a cover-up. Several
[0:42] months ago the Pentagon said that 150
[0:45] American troops might have been exposed
[0:47] to nerve gas right after the Persian
[0:48] Gulf War. Then in June they raised the
[0:50] number to 1,000. Today the Pentagon says
[0:53] that maybe 5,000 troops were exposed to
[0:56] the nerve gas sarin
[0:58] and maybe other stuff after army
[1:00] engineers blew up bunkers where it was
[1:02] stored. And if you listen to at least
[1:04] one general today, maybe 25,000 were
[1:07] exposed.
[1:08] There were certainly questions today
[1:10] which the Pentagon is finding so
[1:11] difficult to answer. They didn't show up
[1:13] at a hearing on Capitol Hill.
[1:15] Here's ABC's John McWethy.
[1:19] The Pentagon's announcement that still
[1:20] more troops may have been exposed to
[1:22] nerve gas during the Gulf War drew sharp
[1:25] criticism today on Capitol Hill. At a
[1:27] hearing on Gulf War illness, some
[1:29] members accused the Pentagon of a
[1:31] cover-up.
[1:32] In addition to trying to get at the root
[1:34] cause of the Persian Gulf syndrome, we
[1:36] hold the Defense Department accountable
[1:38] and we hold those officials accountable
[1:41] who have not been telling the
