[0:04] is somewhere in the southern regions of
[0:06] Iraq, not too far beyond the Kuwaiti
[0:09] border where he's been on the move as he
[0:10] described for probably about 14 hours
[0:12] now. Good. Uh, well, morning to you. I
[0:15] guess it must be approaching afternoon
[0:17] there. Well, no, it's shortly after
[0:18] 10:00 in the morning, I believe. David,
[0:19] tell me what is the latest from there.
[0:21] Describe the setting for us.
[0:25] Well, Alice, I mean, we're out in the
[0:26] middle of a desert is basically the
[0:28] setting. Uh what this is is the this is
[0:31] the lead elements of the US Army's Third
[0:33] Infantry Division which has about 20,000
[0:36] soldiers in it. But we're with the 315
[0:38] infantry of the second brigade of the
[0:41] third ID, which basically means these
[0:43] are the guys who were the first ones
[0:45] across the border into Iraq because, as
[0:48] I've said, their mission was to hit two
[0:50] observation posts, first with artillery,
[0:53] then with infantrymen to make sure that
[0:55] they could not uh relay a message back
[0:57] to Baghdad as to where the Third ID
[1:00] would be rolling into southern Iraq
[1:02] from. because obviously if they know
[1:04] where they're coming in from, they can
[1:05] anticipate what routes they might take.
[1:07] And this force obviously doesn't want
[1:08] them to do that. Right now, we're
[1:10] stopped and basically waiting for the
[1:12] rest of the force to catch up with us
[1:15] because obviously when you've got uh
[1:17] 6,000 7,000 vehicles, 20,000 soldiers,
[1:20] it takes a long time to move them
[1:23] through those lanes into uh into
[1:25] southern Iraq. So basically we're at a
[1:27] staging area here uh inside Iraq where
[1:30] the rest of the f
