[0:05] This is the CBS Evening News. Bob
[0:07] Schaefer sitting in tonight for Dan
[0:08] Rather. Good evening. US officials said
[0:11] today that Libya may already have begun
[0:13] producing material for chemical weapons.
[0:15] The State Department called on US allies
[0:18] to cut assistance to Mumar Gaddaf's
[0:20] regime before it goes into fullcale
[0:22] production. So far, however, the allies
[0:25] are skeptical. West Germany said it is
[0:27] investigating some German businesses,
[0:29] but has found no evidence yet to verify
[0:32] the American suspicions. State
[0:34] Department correspondent Wyatt Andrews
[0:36] begins our report.

[1:02] >> Sources tell CBS News of intelligence
[1:04] reports that the new factory can soon
[1:06] make up to 40 tons a day of simple
[1:08] mustard gas or a nerve gas called sarin
[1:12] and that Gaddafi has already produced
[1:14] small test runs of a compound believed
[1:16] but not proven to be mustard gas.
[1:19] Sources say satellite photographs of the
[1:21] compound show it surrounded by a 40 foot
[1:24] tall earthn wall that it is reigned with
[1:26] Soviet-made surfaceto-air missiles along
[1:28] with unusual concentrations of troops.
[1:31] It's said to be more heavily defended
[1:33] than any military installation in Libya.
[1:35] >> Got air defenses around the facility.
[1:37] So,
