[0:02] from Lanica, Cyprus. Chief UN weapons

[0:05] inspector Hans Blicks tells CBS News,

[0:08] "Iraq must open itself more fully to

[0:10] scrutiny and fast.

[0:12] >> Time is running out and the situation is

[0:14] very tense."

[0:15] >> In Iraq today, inspections at a faster

[0:18] pace, but also more evidence of foot

[0:21] dragging.

[0:22] Also, a day of protest. Tens of

[0:25] thousands rally across the country to

[0:27] oppose military action against Iraq. And

[0:31] soaring [music] prices for natural gas,

[0:33] putting a chill on the US economy.

[0:37] [music]

[0:41] This is the CBS Evening News with Dan

[0:44] Rather [music] reporting tonight from

[0:46] Lica, Cypress, and Russ Mitchell from

[0:48] New York. Good evening from Cyprus from

[0:50] where Chief UN arms inspector Hans

[0:52] Blicks is preparing to leave tomorrow

[0:54] for Baghdad. Today his search team

[0:57] stepped up the pace visiting at least

[0:59] five sites including a complex just

[1:02] south of Baghdad that once was the home

[1:04] of Iraq's nuclear program. But an effort

[1:07] to inspect sites in the northern no-fly

[1:09] zone was stymied by Baghdad's insistence

[1:12] that the teams let Iraqi helicopters

[1:14] come along, which of course are banned

[1:17] from that area. There's also word

[1:19] tonight that the papers seized Thursday

[1:21] from the home of a top Iraqi scientist

[1:24] appear to relate to laser enrichment of

[1:26] uranium mafia. For his part, that

[1:29] scientist claimed today that the

[1:31] inspector used quote mafia-like tactics,

[1:34] including an effort to lure him out of

[1:36] the country by promising medical care

[1:38] for his ailing wife. I discussed all of

[1:40] this a short while ago in an interview

[1:42] with Hans Blicks and Muhammad Alvardi
