[0:00] Channel 2 from ABC. This is World News
[0:03] Tonight with Peter Jennings. Tonight,
[0:05] reporting from Washington, Ted Cppel.
[0:08] >> Good evening, Danny. The fourth tropical
[0:10] storm of the season has graduated to the
[0:12] more dangerous status of hurricane. By
[0:15] definition, that is when a tropical
[0:16] storm has sustained winds of 74 mph.
[0:20] Hurricane Danny, now 250 mi souths
[0:23] southwest of New Orleans, began late
[0:25] this afternoon, packing winds of 75 m an
[0:28] hour and could hit land within the next
[0:31] 24 hours. As ABC's Mark Potter reports,
[0:34] people along the coast are taking no
[0:36] chances. In New Orleans, the biggest
[0:39] concern is for workers on the offshore
[0:41] oil rigs.

[0:46] thousands of them ashore. They had spent
[0:49] the night preparing the rigs for the
[0:50] storm.

[0:55] night and it started getting kind of
[0:56] rough on us trying to get ready to move
[0:58] off the rig.
[1:00] >> Since the type of rig we on, it can kill
[1:02] pretty easily. You know, the wind
[1:04] velocity would pick up, you know, any
[1:06] more than what it is.
[1:07] >> But most precautions now are being taken
[1:09] west of New Orleans along the Louisiana
[1:11] Texas border. Because of previous
[1:13] experiences, those areas take hurricane
[1:16] threats seriously. In coastal Cameron,
[1:18] Louisiana, residents have been ordered
[1:20] to evacuate immediately. Many already
[1:23] have left by ferryboat. They're also
[1:25] boarding up windows there. In 1957,
[1:28] Cameron was leveled by a hurricane in
[1:30] which 381 persons died. In Sabine Pass,
[1:34] Texas, the Coast
