[0:04] This is an NBC News special report.
[0:09] >> And good morning. Welcome to this NBC
[0:11] News special report. You're looking live
[0:13] at the White House Rose Garden where
[0:16] President Bush will be making a
[0:17] statement in just about a minute from
[0:19] now on the death of Iraqi Al-Qaeda
[0:21] leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
[0:24] I'm Matt Lauer in New York along with
[0:25] Ann Curry. It's a major victory for the
[0:27] Bush administration, big news for US
[0:29] forces in Iraq. Al-Zarqawi was killed in
[0:32] a US airstrike Wednesday north of
[0:33] Baghdad just outside the town of
[0:36] Baqubah.
[0:36] >> Iraq's new Prime Minister says the
[0:38] terror leader was killed along with
[0:40] seven aides. This as Matt has mentioned
[0:42] is welcome news for the Bush
[0:43] administration which has suffered in the
[0:44] polls due to the war.
[0:46] >> Let's turn now to NBC's chief White
[0:48] House correspondent David Gregory.
[0:50] David, what kind of tone do you expect
[0:52] to hear from the president this morning?
[0:55] >> Cautious. I think he will underscore the
[0:57] importance of the killing of Zarqawi to
[0:59] the overall campaign in Iraq, but this
[1:02] will not be an end of the violence. The
[1:04] president knows that. He needs the
[1:05] country to know that, but this will he
[1:07] believes breathe new life into this new
[1:09] unity government led by Nouri al-Maliki
[1:11] in Iraq. He will talk about the fact
[1:13] that would have been another big
[1:14] headline today that Maliki filled some
[1:16] key security posts within his cabinet.
[1:19] And so there's two reasons for new
[1:21] optimism in this new government. finding
[1:24] out the news Matt last night getting
[1:26] final confirmation just before he went
[1:28] to
