[0:01] >> The Glacia Patrol is one of

[0:02] Switzerland's toughest endurance races

[0:04] over rough and dangerous alpine

[0:06] territories. The race in two stages

[0:09] starts out in the night in the

[0:10] fashionable alpine resort of Zerat and

[0:12] finishes over 50 kilometers later in the

[0:15] winter resort of Verbier. This year, 640

[0:18] patrols of three people each took part

[0:20] in the race. Competitors have to run,

[0:23] ski, climb, and struggle over 8,000 m at

[0:25] altitude variation.

[0:28] The race reaches its highest point of

[0:30] 3,650 m at the Tet Blanch, dipping and

[0:33] rising again twice to around 3,000 m.

[0:36] The patrols are out to beat the 7hour 29

[0:39] minute and 30 second record set in 1994.

[0:43] Conditions were tough this year because

[0:44] of lack of snow. This meant competitors

[0:47] were forced to walk and run greater

[0:48] distances rather than ski. The army,

[0:51] which runs the race, is in charge of

[0:53] security and clearing the route of

[0:54] potential avalanches and danger spots.

[0:58] Obviously, if the snow melts, we come

[1:00] across a lot more obstacles than the

[1:01] stones and rocks we would normally come

[1:03] across. We won't be able to mark them

[1:05] all, but participants will be forced to

[1:07] follow an itinerary, which we will

[1:08] establish to get past all these rocks.

[1:12] >> Competitors who don't comply will be

[1:14] disqualified.

[1:17] The night was tough. The favorite patrol

[1:19] and record holders were forced out of

[1:21] the race due to illness. And for those

[1:24] who survived the night, the struggles of

[1:26] the day were still to come.

[1:32] The surprise winners of the race were

[1:34] the Swiss Frontier Guards Patrol. They

[1:36] trai
