[0:00] Hello, I'm Bob Schaefer and welcome to
[0:02] the CBS Evening News online edition.
[0:04] Just ahead, cries for help. CBS News has
[0:07] been given exclusive access to 911 tapes
[0:11] recorded when the hurricane first hit.
[0:14] Baron Pittz will have that story. Also,
[0:16] embattled FEMA director Mike Brown has
[0:19] resigned. We'll have details and we'll
[0:21] begin our series Crisis Check with a
[0:23] look at why FEMA called in hundreds of

[1:00] this disaster.

[1:07] seemed cursed. Late this afternoon, a
[1:09] levy in northeast New Orleans broke,
[1:11] flooding some neighborhoods all over
[1:13] again. Hours earlier, President Bush was
[1:16] in town managing his own political
[1:18] crisis. This marked the president's
[1:21] third trip to the city, his first actual
[1:23] on the ground survey of the devastation.
[1:26] But if he was hoping to reach out to the
[1:27] citizens of New Orleans, he was too
[1:29] late. Since most of the vic
