[0:00] And this is
[0:01] from NBC News world headquarters in New
[0:04] York. This is NBC Nightly News reported
[0:08] by John Seigenthaler.
[0:11] Good evening everyone. More than 2,000
[0:13] postal workers in Washington, D.C. are
[0:15] being tested for anthrax after one of
[0:17] them was diagnosed today with the
[0:19] inhaled and more dangerous form of the
[0:21] disease. Officials say the man is
[0:23] gravely ill, but responding to
[0:25] antibiotic.
[0:26] He works at the Brentwood mail center
[0:28] where an anthrax letter was processed.
[0:30] We begin with NBC's Joe Johns outside
[0:33] that mail center in Washington. Joe?
[0:35] Good evening, John. The third person in
[0:37] the U.S. to test positive for inhalation
[0:40] anthrax is now listed in serious
[0:42] condition at an area hospital. Two other
[0:45] people connected to this case are being
[0:47] described as suspicious based on their
[0:49] clinical illness. Meanwhile, this postal
[0:51] facility behind me has been closed down.
[0:56] As officials notified his co-workers,
[0:58] there was a steady flow of people coming
[1:00] in to be tested and to pick up a 10-day
[1:03] supply of antibiotics. Anthrax anxiety
[1:06] was already spreading in the nation's
[1:08] capital today as the hunt for an
[1:10] invisible enemy expanded in full force
[1:13] from Capitol Hill to the Postal Service.
[1:16] Authorities said the postal worker
[1:17] diagnosed with inhalation anthrax showed
[1:20] up at this northern Virginia hospital on
[1:22] Friday complaining of flu-like symptoms.
[1:25] The diagnosis was confirmed today.
[1:28] Sending the prayers and condolences of
[1:30] everyone in our city
[1:32] uh to the gentleman who is now uh uh
[1:36] gravely ill from uh contracting uh
[1:40] anthrax uh here in
