[0:00] Stalemate in the Senate on Iraq. Joey

[0:02] Chen reports on the vote against

[0:04] President Bush's troop surge that fell

[0:06] short. Courting conservatives, Randall

[0:09] Pinkston tracks Republican presidential

[0:11] hopefuls hoping to win over a key

[0:13] constituency. And suburban invaders,

[0:16] Jerry Bowen shows us homeowners

[0:18] resisting the call of the wild in the

[0:20] heart of LA.

[0:25] This is the CBS Evening News.

[0:32] Good evening. They came to work on a

[0:34] Saturday, but Democrats in the Senate

[0:36] couldn't pull it off. The Senate voted

[0:38] against advancing a resolution that

[1:22] Some members scurried back from what was

[1:26] some presidential wannabes bailed out of

[1:28] big campaign appearances. Because though

[1:30] no one thought the measure had a

[1:32] snowball's chance, most senators

[1:34] couldn't risk the political backlash

[1:36] they'd face for not showing up.

[1:38] The leadership decided to have this

[1:39] debate toda
