[0:00] Time Warner Cable, your connection to

[0:03] the future.

[0:09] >> From NBC News World Headquarters in New

[0:12] York, this is NBC Nightly News with

[0:16] Lester Halt.

[0:17] >> Good evening. We begin this West Coast

[0:19] edition of the broadcast tonight. Our

[0:21] eyes are on two major unfolding stories.

[0:24] First, near Los Angeles, a tragedy that

[0:26] has grown worse all day. The death toll

[0:28] from yesterday's collision between a

[0:30] freight and commuter train has risen

[0:32] dramatically, making it the nation's

[0:34] worst rail disaster in a dozen years.

[0:36] We'll go live to the scene shortly. And

[0:39] in Texas tonight, a major search and

[0:41] rescue operation is underway for those

[0:43] stranded in high water areas in the wake

[0:45] of Hurricane Ike. The storm blew ashore

[0:48] this morning near Galveastston. Somewhat

[0:50] weaker than expected, but nonetheless

[0:52] has caused extensive flooding and damage

[0:54] in the Houston Galveastston area. We've

[0:56] got correspondents stationed along the

[0:58] path of Ike's landfall. It will begin in

[1:01] Galveastston now with NBC's Janet

[1:03] Shamley. And Janet, good evening.

[1:06] Hello, Lester. Well, it's much calmer

[1:08] here tonight, but this storm has brought

[1:10] much of Texas to its knees this evening.

[1:13] There are millions of people without the

[1:15] essentials, electricity, and running

[1:17] water. While here in Galveastston, many

[1:19] others have homes that are full of

[1:21] water.

[1:24] The morning after.

[1:26] This is what the region woke up to after

[1:28] a storm almost as big as Texas itself

[1:31] plowed into Galveastston with winds that

[1:33] flattened buildings and water that

[1:35] buried the island.

[1:36] >> It was pretty horrendous. T
