[0:03] to salvage Iraq's peace initiative and
[0:06] US Marines launch what could be the
[0:08] prelude to a ground [music] war.
[0:13] This is the CBS Evening [music] News.
[0:15] Bob Schaefer reporting.
[0:17] Good evening. With all signs now
[0:19] indicating the allied forces could
[0:21] launch a ground attack on Iraqi forces
[0:23] within a matter of days, perhaps even
[0:25] hours. Attention on the diplomatic front
[0:28] is shifting this weekend to Moscow. The
[0:30] Iraqi foreign minister is scheduled to
[0:32] arrive there soon for talks with Soviet

[1:08] happen. They are trying to turn a
[1:10] proposal President Bush called a hoax
[1:12] into a viable alternative to a costly
[1:14] ground war for Kuwait. In Moscow,
[1:17] officials welcomed the Iraqi statement
[1:19] despite a list of conditions that Soviet
[1:21] diplomats said may render it
[1:22] meaningless.
[1:23] >> The thing which might lead to posit
[1:25] positive results is certainly uh the
[1:28] Iraqi willingness at least to talk now
[1:30] about the withdrawal of their forces
[1:33] from Kuwait. and we'd li
