[0:00] bad behavior against the Wyoming
[0:02] wildfires. School athletes crying foul
[0:05] over other teams that won't come to
[0:07] play. And retirement dreams put on hold
[0:10] now that 401ks are striking out.
[0:17] This is the CBS Evening
[0:20] News with Russ Mitchell.
[0:24] And good evening. There is a new mood
[0:25] tonight. The sometimes shaky
[0:27] relationship between the US and China.
[0:30] Secretary of State Coen Powell in
[0:31] Beijing for an historic meeting with
[0:33] Chinese officials appears to have set a
[0:35] new tone in America's approach to China.
[0:37] A tone that leaders of the world's most
[0:39] populous nation seem to like. Barry
[0:41] Peterson is in Beijing.
[0:44] He came. Good to see you again. He met
[0:47] and he made new friends. Very important
[0:50] friends. Treated more like a president

[0:57] Jamin, where the Secretary of State,
[0:59] whose boss once called China a strategic
[1:01] competitor, signaled a shift away from
[1:04] confrontation. President Bush wants to
[1:06] build constructive, forward-looking
[1:07] relations with the People's Republic of
[1:09] China. The Chinese smoothed this visit
[1:11] by sending home the American trained
[1:13] scholars convicted of espionage. But
[1:15] that didn't take human rights off the
[1:17] table. Far from it. It was the Chinese
[1:19] foreign minister who told Powell he knew
[1:21] the American would want to discuss the
[1:23] tough topics. I'm sure they want to talk
[1:26] about proliferation and human rights.
[1:29] As for the spy plane incident, both
[1:31] sides agreed it was past history. Both
[1:34] sides seem anxious to move on
