[0:06] On the CBS Evening News this Friday,
[0:08] from the hurricane zone, Florence turns
[0:11] deadly as this massive storm crashes
[0:13] into the Carolinas with strong winds,
[0:15] record rainfall, and flooding. Hundreds
[0:17] of thousands are without power. We have
[0:20] a team of correspondents throughout the
[0:21] region for a special 1-hour edition, and
[0:24] it begins tonight with the headlines in
[0:26] 60 seconds.
[0:29] Hurricane Florence is powerful,
[0:33] slow,
[0:34] and relentless. We got hit very hard.
[0:37] We're right in the eye wall. This is
[0:40] some of the worst of Florence now.
[0:43] At 12:00 noon, high tide rolled in, and
[0:47] with it came some of the most ferocious
[0:49] wind gusts we saw all day.
[0:52] In the New Bern area, we've got big
[0:54] issues with storm surge.
[0:55] Hundreds were rescued overnight from the
[0:57] rushing water. Dozens more are still
[0:59] trapped.
[0:59] Right now, you can't tell the rivers
[1:01] from the roads.
[1:02] I've never seen this kind of damage
[1:04] here. It's bad. The water's just coming
[1:06] up. It's a lot of wind. A lot of trees.
[1:07] We've got a lot of down power lines.
[1:09] We're about 20 miles inland from the
[1:10] coast. This is a massive 63-year-old oak
[1:13] tree that was toppled.
[1:16] It has been a restless night for many of
[1:18] these evacuees. Now they are hoping that
[1:21] they will still have homes to return to.
[1:23] This is life-threatening. We haven't
[1:25] seen the backside of this storm yet.
[1:27] We've never been in anything like it.
[1:29] The winds were howling past.
[1:30] This is scary. It's exactly what they
[1:33] said it was going to be.
[1:36] Good evening. I'm Jeff Glor in
[1:38] Wilmington, North Carolina, and as the
[1:40] East Coast gets better, this
