[0:03] >> Welcome to the situation. Joining you
[0:05] live tonight from an overpass on the
[0:07] outskirts of New Orleans. It spans I 10.
[0:10] Of course, the major artery that goes
[0:11] along the Gulf Coast, spanning towns
[0:13] that were crushed by Hurricane Katrina
[0:15] earlier this week. You can see behind me
[0:17] there's a holding place where thousands
[0:19] of refugees from New Orleans, from the
[0:21] city, from the parts that have been
[0:22] submerged underwater have been taken.
[0:24] Many by helicopter. Some of them been
[0:26] have been waiting here for days.
[0:30] helicopters landing behind me all day
[0:32] long. Landing, taking off as they do as
[0:35] the rotors come down. Trash blows up
[0:37] from the field. It's littered with
[0:39] trash.
[0:40] >> You can see that there are people with
[0:41] small children. All these people behind
[0:44] me, the thousands who have been here.
[0:46] For all of them, there is a total of
[0:48] four portagons, four restrooms for the
[0:51] rest using the open field uh as latrine.
[0:54] It's a chaotic scene here. I I talked to
[0:56] one man who was with a small child, a
[0:58] daughter about 2 years old. Asked him,
[1:00] "Where are you going?" A bus had just
[1:01] pulled up, a school bus from Lafayette
[1:03] Parish. He said, "I have no idea." None
[1:05] of the people getting on the bus seem to
[1:06] have any idea where they're going,
[1:08] except they were leaving here, which is
[1:09] what they wanted to be doing. About 20
[1:11] minutes ago, someone, a man who was
[1:13] standing down here on the field, ran up
[1:15] onto the overpass where we are, there no
[1:17] lights, of course, cuz the the
[1:18] electricity is out all around. And ran
[1:21] right down I 10 here
