[0:02] >> Hurricane Andrew threatens southern
[0:04] Florida with powerful winds and high
[0:06] tides.
[0:08] More than 1 million people are being
[0:09] ordered to evacuate now.
[0:12] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:20] Good evening everyone. I'm Edie Magnus
[0:22] sitting in tonight for Connie Chung. It
[0:24] may just be the worst hurricane to ever
[0:26] hit a metropolitan area in the US.
[0:28] Hurricane Andrew is bearing down on
[0:30] Florida. It is packing winds clocked at
[0:33] 150 mph. More than 1 million people have
[0:36] been ordered to evacuate and the
[0:38] National Guard has been placed on alert.
[0:40] A hurricane warning now extends from
[0:43] Vero Beach to Key West along the
[0:44] Atlantic coast and from Venice to
[0:47] Flamingo along Florida's west coast. It
[0:49] also includes Lake Oki Chobee. We spoke
[0:52] just minutes ago with the director of
[0:54] the National Hurricane Center, Bob
[0:56] Sheets.

[1:00] Bahamas. Right here over my shoulder,
[1:01] you can see the eye of the hurricane
[1:03] wobble just by Luther Island. They
[1:05] reported 120 mph winds, and that's on
[1:08] the weak side of the hurricane. On the
[1:09] north side of that hurricane, it has
[1:12] winds of about 150 mph. It looks like
[1:15] now the center will pass inland sometime
[1:17] near dawn uh in the Miami Fort
[1:20] Lauderdale area.
[1:21] >> And what do you think will be the course
[1:23] of the hurricane? Well, as it goes
[1:25] across the Florida Peninsula, of course,
[1:27] we're going to have significant damage
[1:29] here in Miami, Fort Lauderdale area, and
[1:31] then continue on to the west coast of
[1:34] Florida and then out into the Gulf over
[1:36] the next 2 to three days.
[1:37] >> Is there
