[0:10] It's 300 p.m. Central time along the

[0:13] Gulf Coast, making slow progress toward

[0:15] recovery. Flood waters keep going down

[0:18] in New Orleans, and some children are

[0:20] going back to school in Mississippi. And

[0:23] it's 400 p.m. here in Washington where

[0:25] John Roberts has been in the hot seat on

[0:27] Capitol Hill. Are we learning anything

[0:30] new about the Chief Justice nominee or

[0:32] the senators getting ready to grill him?

[0:35] I'm Wolf Blitzer. You're in the

[1:18] action today during stops in Gulfport,

[1:21] Mississippi, and earlier in the day in

[1:23] New Orleans. It was his first on the

[1:25] ground look at that devastated Louisiana

[1:28] city. The state of Louisiana has raised

[1:31] its official Katrina death toll now to

[1:33] 279.

[1:35] Meantime, the flood waters continue to

[1:37] recede with 40% of the city still

[1:40] underwater or thick sludge. And the

[1:43] lights are back for almost 69,000

[1:46] customers along the Mississippi coast.

[1:49] That's the most Mississippi Power says

[1:51] it can reconnect right now. M
