[0:01] NBC Nightly News
[0:04] with John Chancellor in New York.
[0:08] Good evening and Merry Christmas. In
[0:10] Poland tonight, Christmas is over and
[0:12] the government says it has eliminated
[0:14] all but one large show of resistance to
[0:16] martial law. More than a thousand miners
[0:18] are holding out underground in Silesian
[0:21] coal mines. Otherwise, Poland seems
[0:23] quiet and Warsaw radio said that workers
[0:25] were back at their jobs in mills and
[0:27] factories. Jim Bittermann in London has
[0:29] been watching the Polish story as it
[0:31] unfolded in several places today.
[0:33] [Applause]
[0:35] The Pope blessed the city of Rome and
[0:36] the world in his Christmas greetings
[0:38] from St. Peter's, but he gave a special
[0:40] blessing this Christmas to his native
[0:41] Poland.
[0:43] Poles in Vatican Square cheered and
[0:44] raised high a Solidarity Union banner.
[0:48] In his message, John Paul said he was
[0:50] disturbed by a world that drives people
[0:52] from work, locks them up in
[0:54] concentration camps, deprives them of a
[0:56] homeland.
[0:57] In his homeland, the reference to
[0:59] concentration camps must have been too
[1:01] pointed for official comfort. When the
[1:03] Pope was shown on Polish television
[1:05] tonight, the reference was carefully
[1:06] edited out.
[1:08] As were the pictures of Poles waving
[1:10] flags and holding the Solidarity banner.
[1:13] That's not all the TV audiences saw this
[1:15] Christmas. There was a sympathetic
[1:17] portrayal of soldiers doing their
[1:18] martial law duties.
[1:21] And for the second night running, a
[1:22] critical report on the economic
[1:24] sanctions President Reagan imposed on
[1:26] Poland, including a harsh commentary
[1:28] from Moscow.
[1:30] After the newscas
