[0:19] When Al Giddings first began diving more

[0:21] than 30 years ago, there were no

[0:23] underwater housings available to protect

[0:25] the cameras of daredevil undersea

[0:27] photographers like himself.

[0:32] What you're seeing is the tremendous

[0:34] power of a nuclear electric plant

[0:36] concentrated into a laser beam.

[0:40] The UCLA School of Dentistry is using

[0:43] facial prosthetics in a unique marriage

[0:45] of art, science, and medicine. The same

[0:47] technology used to replace a missing

[0:49] tooth is making people whole again.

[0:54] Hello, I'm Richard Hart. The world's

[0:57] biggest laser, in the blink of an eye,

[0:59] generates as much power as all of the

[1:01] United States of America. It was built

[1:03] for military research, and as the

[1:05] science fiction movie cliche goes, it

[1:07] can be used for good or evil. The choice

[1:09] is ours. Well, the people who make

[1:11] computer chips have come up with one

[1:13] good idea.

[1:24] What you're seeing is the tremendous

[1:26] power of a nuclear electric plant

[1:28] concentrated into a laser beam.

[1:34] In a joint project between the Lawrence

[1:36] Livermore National Lab and Hampshire

[1:38] Instruments, laser technology, initially

[1:41] developed to shoot down high-flying

[1:43] missiles for the Star Wars program, is

[1:45] now being used to manufacture computer

[1:47] chips.

[1:51] >> This is a

[1:53] 25 joule per pulse flash lamp pump glass

[1:57] regenerative amplifier system. It

[2:00] delivers 25 joules at up to 3 hertz and

[2:03] a 10 nanosecond pulse.

[2:08] >> What that does is when the beam strikes

[2:10] say iron or copper, huge amounts of

[2:13] invisible x-rays are released. But that

[2:15] takes awesome power, power measured in

[2:18] gigawatts.

[2:19] >> 2 gigawatts is
