[0:01] The hidden danger in the water in
[0:03] Taiwan. A frantic search for victims of
[0:05] an earthquake that literally knocked
[0:07] buildings off their foundations. A new
[0:10] kind of worker pension is under attack
[0:13] on Capitol Hill. And school security.
[0:16] One school expels a student for
[0:18] misbehavior in what he thought was the
[0:20] privacy of his own home.
[0:23] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:27] [music] with Dan Rather reporting from
[0:29] CBS News headquarters in New York. Good
[0:33] evening. And the rains came again to all
[0:36] the wrong places in the Eastern United
[0:38] States. There was rain on top of flood,
[0:41] on top of misery, and now the threat of
[0:43] disease. Almost a week after Hurricane
[0:46] Floyd, more than 1,000 people are still
[0:50] missing in the Carolinas and Virginia.
[0:52] They're not necessarily dead or injured,
[0:54] but simply not accounted for. It's an
[0:56] astonishing figure. This as the latest
[0:58] Atlantic hurricane, the latest tropical
[1:01] storm and associated rain raised the
[1:03] toll of misery. Tropical storm Harvey
[1:06] veered south from the Gulf of Mexico and
[1:08] dumped torrential rain almost a foot
[1:10] deep in some places as it sliced across
[1:13] the tip of South Florida to the
[1:14] Atlantic. In part, this drove a posh
[1:17] hurricane Floyd threat of more rain
[1:20] today up the Atlantic coast from the
[1:22] Carolinas in Virginia through
[1:23] Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and north of
[1:25] New York City. As Floyd related deaths
[1:28] neared 70, it appeared the worst may not
[1:31] be over yet, at least not in North
[1:33] Carolina. Receding waters revealed more
[1:36] bodies. CBS's Byron Pittz is there in
[1:39] the thick of it.
