[0:01] Movies have always had the power to move

[0:03] us, but now the plot isn't the only

[0:06] thing taking viewers for a ride. 40X

[0:09] theaters bring movies to life with 21

[0:12] different effects. From every twist,

[0:14] turn, and tumble to gusts of wind,

[0:16] splashes of water, even scents that put

[0:19] the viewers right in the scene.

[0:20] >> When I see a movie, it's always in for

[0:23] DX. I enjoyed it being rocked around and

[0:25] stuff. Exciting and realistic. We

[0:28] visited the world's largest 4DX

[0:30] auditorium at Regal Cinemas in Time

[0:32] Square and got a front row seat to the

[0:34] action. I'm holding tight to my popcorn.

[0:37] A 4DX ticket costs about $10 more than a

[0:41] standard seat, but that hasn't deterred

[0:43] movie goers.

[0:44] >> This summer was incredible. We had

[0:46] Odyssey and Spider-Man selling out weeks

[0:48] in advance. Regal Times Square general

[0:50] manager Raymond Diaz says nearly 50% of

[0:54] their ticket sales last year were for

[0:55] 40X screenings.

[0:57] >> You cannot get this on a DVD. There's no

[0:59] other way to replicate it. You got to

[1:01] watch it in the theaters. If you don't,

[1:02] you missed it.

[1:03] >> The Odyssey was obviously very popular

[1:05] this year. What effects were going on?

[1:07] >> The ship rocking and then you had the

[1:09] water effects that came with that with

[1:10] the splashing and also the smell of sea

[1:13] salt.

[1:13] >> Okay.

[1:14] >> As you were taking the journey on the on

[1:16] the boat with them.

[1:16] >> It's like an amusement park.

[1:18] >> Yeah. And just to experience that with

[1:19] other people is really something that's

[1:21] just really special.

[1:22] >> People are looking for community.

[1:24] >> Of course, it all requires leaving the

[1:26] house.

[1:27] >> I want something to like jump out at me

[1:29] like more than it would on my couch.

[1:31] >> Movie theater attendance is up 8% from

[1:33] last year, though still 26% below

[1:36] prepandemic levels.

[1:37] >> I really came to the movies just to

[1:38] experience 4D. So, I would say adding

[1:40] new things into theaters would help

[1:42] bring people back.

[1:43] >> One way to shake up the box office. Evan

[1:46] Moon, CBS News, New York.
