[0:03] Tonight, Israeli warplanes kill a top
[0:05] Hamas leader in a major escalation of
[0:08] the attacks on Gaza. There's an
[0:10] international effort to stop the
[0:11] bombing, but a ground invasion could
[0:13] come anytime. I'm Jeff Glor. Also
[0:15] tonight, the bizarre bombing plot that
[0:18] shut down Aspen, Colorado on New Year's
[0:20] Eve. He wrapped gasoline bombs in
[0:22] holiday paper and warned the town would
[0:24] pay a horrible price. Howling winds and
[0:28] relentless snowstorms. 2009 begins with
[0:31] a winter wallup. And we say goodbye to
[0:34] 2008 with a look back at a year many
[0:37] would like to forget.

[0:51] Good evening and happy new year. Katie's
[0:53] off tonight. The situation in Gaza is at
[0:55] a critical point this evening. Israeli
[0:57] leaders face a decision. used ground
[0:59] troops to fight Hamas or bow to
[1:01] international pressure to halt the
[1:03] attacks. Today, they increased their air
[1:05] assault, dropping a one-tonon bomb on
[1:08] the home of a top Hamas leader and
[1:09] killing him. Hamas, meanwhile, fired at
[1:11] least 30 rockets of its own into Israel.
[1:14] And while Israel indicated it would
[1:16] consider a truce if international
[1:18] monitors were brought in. Mark Phillips
[1:20] reports now from the front lines.
[1:24] >> Now, it's getting personal.
[1:27] Having battered Gaza for 6 days, Israeli
[1:30] bombers have begun to go after Gaza's
[1:32] Hamas leadership.
[1:34] This used to be the house of Nisar Ryan,
[1:37] one of Hamas's main ideologues, who the
[1:39] Israelis say preached a doctrine of
[1:42] suicide bombing and even sacrificed his
[1:44] own son on a mission that also killed
[1:46] two Israelis
