[0:01] Oscar Greeley Glanville Denning
[0:04] Hammerstein, better known as Oscar
[0:06] Hammerstein II, was
[0:07] born into show business almost 60 years
[0:10] ago.
[0:11] He grew up here in New York City,
[0:13] studied at Columbia University, planned
[0:15] to become a lawyer.
[0:16] But the show business blood of his
[0:17] grandfather, his father, and his uncle
[0:19] was too strong.
[0:21] At the age of 24, Oscar Hammerstein had
[0:23] his first show on Broadway. He's been
[0:26] represented there ever since.
[0:27] And in recent years, he and composer
[0:30] Richard Rodgers have broken just about
[0:31] every theatrical record with shows like
[0:33] Oklahoma, South Pacific, and The King
[0:35] and I.
[0:37] In 1929, Oscar married Dorothy
[0:39] Blanchard, an actress who later became a
[0:41] highly successful interior decorator.
[0:44] They'll be married 26 years tomorrow.
[0:47] The Hammersteins live in a townhouse
[0:48] here in Manhattan.
[0:50] But whatever free time they have, they
[0:51] spend it at their farm in Bucks County,
[0:53] Pennsylvania.
[0:54] Where they love to gather with their
[0:56] five children, and I think at the last
[0:58] count it was seven grandchildren. Good
[1:01] evening, Oscar.
[1:02] Hello, Ed.
[1:03] Did Did I get the family count right?
[1:05] Well, counting step grandchildren, I
[1:07] have nine.
[1:08] Aha.
[1:08] And we have another one coming.
[1:10] And there may be still another. They
[1:11] don't tell you everything, you know.
[1:14] Well, Oscar, this is the kind of weather
[1:15] when we should be enjoying the farm,
[1:17] isn't it?
[1:18] I like to be down there in all kinds of
[1:19] weather, Ed. I do most of my work there,
[1:22] and we have most of our fun there.
[1:24] Tell me,
[1:25] are you one of these gentlemen farmers?
[1:28] Oh, no. I'm a very commerc
