[0:07] This is NBC Nightly News. Reporting from
[0:10] New York, Jessica Savage.
[0:13] >> Good evening. There are sounds of war,
[0:15] but there are also rumblings of peace in
[0:17] Beirut tonight. Israeli troops and
[0:19] Palestinian guerrillas exchanged
[0:21] occasional fire. But a leftist radio
[0:24] station quoted Yaser Arafat as saying
[0:26] his PLO has agreed to start pulling out
[0:28] in the next few days. And Sahib Salam,
[0:32] the former Lebanese premier who's been
[0:33] negotiating with US envoy Philip Habib,
[0:36] says he thinks a deal will be struck

[1:10] news that agreement may be near to
[1:12] remove the PLO from Lebanon is not new.
[1:15] Hopes have been raised before, only to
[1:17] die as fighting broke out again. It
[1:20] isn't new in Israel either. The
[1:22] government's only official reaction was
[1:24] to wait and see, to wait for details
[1:26] from Ambassador Habib. But one
[1:28] government official was quoted privately
[1:30] as saying Israel can't accept the
[1:32] reported plan because it provides for an
[1:34] evacuation of the PLO in stages with a
[1:37] multinational peacekeeping force
[1:39] arriving before all the PLO leav
