[0:05] >> This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:07] reporting. Good evening. Whether one
[0:10] sees it as a comic opera, a danger to US
[0:13] national security, or both, the
[0:14] situation in Panama tonight is
[0:16] complicated and confusing. General
[0:18] Manuel Norya still appears to have the
[0:20] upper hand. He is the near dictator who
[0:23] reportedly did business with Oliver
[0:24] North and had other powerful Washington
[0:26] connections but became an embarrassment
[0:29] when exposed as a big man with narcotics

[1:13] Panama. I believe that the
[1:15] constitutional uh president will have
[1:18] the backing of the people and will have
[1:19] the backing of all the democratic
[1:22] nations of the of the continent. Now
[1:24] support from abroad and public opinion
[1:26] are his only weapons. But it will be
[1:28] hard for Delva's voice to be heard here.
[1:31] Troops shut down his television station
[1:33] and closed the opposition newspaper. And
