[0:00] This is CNN
[0:04] >> from Washington. Crossfire.
[0:07] On the left, Mike Kinsley. On the right,
[0:11] Matthew Cannon.
[0:13] Tonight, the beginning of the end.
[0:17] Good evening and welcome to Crossfire.
[0:19] Is peace at hand. You heard the news.
[0:22] The Soviets and Iraqis have agreed on a
[0:24] deal to get the Iraqi army out of Kuwait
[0:27] without conditions. Clearly, the ball is
[0:30] now in the White House court. Is this
[0:33] enough to bring about a ceasefire? And
[0:36] does it mean an almost certain halt in
[0:38] plans for the US ground war, which was
[0:41] said to be only hours away from now?
[0:44] Michael,
[0:44] >> our guests are Christopher Hitchens,
[0:46] author and columnist for The Nation
[0:48] magazine, America's best known left-wing
[0:49] weekly, and Senator John McCain,
[0:51] Republican of Arizona, member of the
[0:53] Armed Services Committee. Senator

[1:05] Are 71% of Americans right or wrong?
[1:08] >> I I think that the always with a poll,
[1:11] Michael, it depends on how the questions
[1:12] asked. you as answer it the way I asked.
[1:15] I
[1:15] >> I think that 71% of the American people
[1:17] are right without conditions and clearly
[1:20] there are conditions but let me
[1:21] emphasize that this is a major step
[1:23] forward and is significant and should be
[1:25] examined by the White House even though
[1:27] clearly the present proposal
[1:29] particularly as regards to reparations
[1:31] for Kuwait uh onethird out left at one
[1:33] time and all that is not in keeping with
[1:35] the
