[0:04] Truce talks in the desert. Iraq agrees
[0:06] to all Allied demands. An Iraqi diplomat
[0:10] announces the first release of Allied
[0:12] PWs. [music] And a jetliner crash in
[0:15] Colorado. All on board are killed.

[0:21] This is the CBS Evening News. Connie
[0:24] Chung reporting. Good evening. Iraq's
[0:27] ambassador to the United Nations says
[0:29] the first of the allied prisoners of war
[0:31] have been released. The announcement
[0:33] came just a short time ago.
[0:36] We have already uh I believe released 10
[0:39] PS as a gesture of goodwill. Six of them
[0:43] are American citizens including one of
[0:45] them the young lady that was captured a
[0:48] few days ago.
[0:50] >> No confirmation yet from US officials
[0:52] either in the Persian Gulf or
[0:54] Washington. General Norman Schwarzoff
[0:56] had called for an immediate symbolic
[0:58] release and complete release of all PS
[1:01] during truce talks today with his Iraqi
[1:03] counterparts. Susan Spencer reports.
[1:07] For this historic meeting, the Allies
[1:09] chose an airfield in southern Iraq,
[1:11] former Republican Guard territory, an
[1:13] airfield they have controlled only for a
[1:16] day and a half. To say security was
[1:18] tight gave new meaning to the term. And
[1:21] the security would apply to the Iraqis,
[1:23] too. They'll be checked by your security
[1:25] and ours and then they'll move down to
[1:27] the negotiation. Now, I don't want them
[1:28] embarrassed in any way. All right. No,
[1:29] sir. Okay. I don't want them humiliated.
[1:32] >> But the general made clear this was not
[1:34] to be an allgether friendly meeting
[1:35] either.
[1:36] >> No question about it. I'm not here to
[1:37] give them anything. I'm here to tell
[1:38] them
