[0:01] Day at 6.

[0:06] >> In South Africa, a party ends in death

[0:08] in a rare attack by blacks against

[0:10] whites.

[0:12] In this country, immigrants from Haiti.

[0:14] How many will be allowed in?

[0:19] >> This is NBC Nightly News reported by

[0:22] Garrick Utley. Good evening. This was

[0:25] the scene in King Williamstown, South

[0:27] Africa. a country club, an integrated

[0:30] club. In the dining room, a wine tasting

[0:32] party, a festive atmosphere, and then

[0:35] and then five men, blacks, burst in,

[0:38] firing automatic weapons and hurling

[0:40] grenades. Four whites were killed, 17

[0:42] others, mostly whites, were injured in

[0:44] the attack. The gunman escaped and South

[0:46] Africa's government now is certain to

[0:48] face mounting pressure that it resists

[0:50] blacks demands for political power. A

[0:53] report from Ferggo Keane. In the

[0:55] darkness, the dead and wounded are

[0:57] carried out. It took the gunmen less

[0:59] than a minute to stage their bloody

[1:01] attack. The results were devastating.

[1:04] Hand grenades were hurled into the

[1:05] dining room, followed by a storm of

[1:07] automatic rifle fire. Although such

[1:10] violence is part of everyday life in

[1:11] many black townships, it's the first

[1:13] time in many years that whites appear to

[1:15] have been targeted deliberately in such

[1:17] large numbers. The ANC president Nelson

[1:20] Mandela was addressing his own

[1:21] supporters today and he appealed for an

[1:24] end to all violence. Violence which he

[1:26] said threatened to destroy South Africa.

[1:29] But the ANC is likely to urge President

[1:31] D clerk to resist what is certain to be

[1:33] a chorus of demands for a security

[1:35] crackdown in the wake of this attack.

[1:37] Fergal Keen
